Portugal beat Switzerland 6

Goncalo Ramos scored a superb hat-trick for Portugal after replacing Cristiano Ronaldo in Fernando Santos’ starting line-up against Switzerland. An emphatic 6-1 win puts Portugal into the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Morocco on Saturday. The winners there will play England or France for a place in the December 18 final. With Ronaldo dropped to the bench, Portugal played with a freedom we had not seen in their previous three matches in Qatar. The 21-year-old Benfica forward Ramos was their standout performer, opening the scoring and adding two more goals after half-time. Pepe, Ronaldo’s replacement as captain, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leao were also on the scoresheet, Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji scored Switzerland’s consolation goal. Mark Carey, Laura Williamson, Michael Bailey and Jeff Rueter analyse the key talking points… Portugal manager Fernando Santos has said that, if he was in Cristiano Ronaldo’s shoes, he would have been angry to have been dropped for today’s victory over Switzerland. “He was like everyone else,” Santos said when asked how Ronaldo reacted to being dropped. “Do you think anyone likes to be on the bench? “I think Jose Sa, he didn’t play one game, one minute. He knows that he is the third goalkeeper. Probably he is not happy to be on the bench. “So, you think Cristiano will be happy? If the manager in the next game put me on the bench, I will be angry with him.” Bernardo Silva, who won the Nations League with Portugal ...

Portugal vs. Uruguay live stream: How to watch 2022 World Cup live online, TV channel, odds, pick, predictions

Portugal are set face Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Monday in a crunch clash in Group H. The Portuguese won their opener against Ghana and the Uruguayans were held to a draw by South Korea. Cristiano Ronaldo made a scoring start to his Qatar campaign, converting from the penalty spot, while La Celeste were unlucky not to beat the Koreans after Fede Valverde smashed the woodwork. These two are expected to advance from the group, but Diego Alonso's Uruguay arguably need the points more given that Fernando Santos' Portugal still have South Korea to face last. However, this will not be decisive for the South Americans in terms of qualification nor elimination. Earlier on Monday Ghana defeated South Korea 3-2 making this match all the more crucial for Uruguay who could be left at the bottom of the group with a loss. With a win Portugal would become the third team at the tournament to start their campaign 2-0 and Brazil's win earlier to day saw them join France on six points. Portugal could also clinch advancing to the knockouts with a victory, while a Uruguay win would still see them with work to do in their third match. Sorry! The 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals will pit Morocco against Portugal at Al Thumama Stadium in Qatar. A spot in the semifinals is on the line, and it is the third meeting in a World Cup between the two teams. Morocco got the better of Portugal in 1986, and 32 years later the Portuguese bested the Moroccans in 2018. Portugal's attack has been revitalized with Cristiano Ronaldo being dropped to the bench while Morocco's defense has already shut down Spain, Belgium and Croatia this tournament. Here's our storylines, how you can watch the match and more: Storylines Morocco: The North African side were relentless in their defensive coverage against Spain during the round of 16. They frustrated the Spaniards in regulation and through extra time and advanced on penalties and a big performance by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. The team will need a strong offensive performance by winger Hakim Ziyech with Sofiane Boufal and Youssef En-Nesyri in support. Craving more World Cup coverage? Listen below and follow Portugal: The benching of Cristiano Ronaldo during their round of 16 match against Switzerland has completely reinvigorated this team. A 6-1 thrashing of the Swiss led by a hat-trick by 21-year-old forward Goncalo Ramos provided all the offensive answers the team was searching for through their group stage. The team looked better than they did in the knockout rounds with Ronaldo on the bench than they did navigating the group stage with him in the starting lineup. Once you've imp...

World Cup result: Portugal advances to knockout stage with 2

Bruno Fernandes has been crowned man of the match following his double against Uruguay. His first goal looked like it may have skimmed Cristiano Ronaldo's hair but replays were unclear and it was eventually credited to the Manchester United midfielder. There were no such doubts about his second goal as he perfectly placed his penalty into the back of the net. Not the most convincing victory for Portugal (again) but they're through with a game to spare. Fernandes and Bernardo Silva were excellent, Ronaldo and Carvalho were decent and, although they look suspect defensively, Portugal do have the talent to go deep in this tournament. As for Uruguay, questions will be asked of their defensive, going-for-a-draw approach. Looks like a tournament too far for them. That said, they came back strong in the latter stages before a triple Portugal sub and a very, very dodgy penalty quelled their momentum. That grudge match against Ghana is lip-lickingly tasty. I'm all for Fernando Santos sending on a winger for a DM but Portugal are wide open here and they're going to concede soon you fancy. Giorgian de Arrascaeta breaks through the back line but, like with Bentancur earlier, can't lift the ball over Diogo Costa. Really good save though, he was off his line sharpish.
