जो प्रदोष व्रत मंगलवार के दिन पड़ता है वह प्रदोष भौम प्रदोष व्रत या मंगल प्रदोष व्रत कहलाता है। इसकी कथा इस प्रकार है.. एक समय की बात है। एक नगर में एक वृद्धा रहती थी। उसका एक ही पुत्र था। वृद्धा की हनुमानजी पर गहरी आस्था थी। वह प्रत्येक मंगलवार को नियमपूर्वक व्रत रखकर हनुमानजी की आराधना करती थी। एक बार हनुमानजी ने अपनी भक्तिनी उस वृद्ध महिला की श्रद्धा का परीक्षण करने का विचार किया। हनुमानजी साधु का वेश धारण कर वृद्धा के घर गए और पुकारने लगे- है कोई हनुमान भक्त! जो हमारी इच्छा पूर्ण करे? आवाज उस वृद्धा के कान में पड़ी, पुकार सुन वृद्धा जल्दी से बाहर आई और साधु को प्रणाम कर बोली- आज्ञा महाराज! हनुमान वेशधारी साधु बोले- मैं भूखा हूँ, भोजन करूंगा, तुम थोड़ी जमीन लीप दो। वृद्धा दुविधा में पड़ गई। अंतत: हाथ जोड़कर बोली- महाराज! लीपने और मिट्टी खोदने के अतिरिक्त आप कोई दूसरी आज्ञा दें, मैं अवश्य पूर्ण करूंगी। साधु ने तीन बार प्रतिज्ञा कराने के पश्चात् कहा- तू अपने बेटे को बुला। मैं उसकी पीठ पर आग जलाकर भोजन बनाऊंगा। यह सुनकर वृद्धा घबरा गई, परंतु वह प्रतिज्ञाबद्ध थी। उसने अपने पुत्र को बुलाकर साधु को सौंप दिया। वेशधारी साधु हनुमानजी ने वृद्धा के हाथों से ही उसके पुत्र को पेट के बल लिटवाया और उसकी पीठ पर आग जलवाई। आग जलाकर दु:खी मन से वृद्धा अपने घर में चली गई। इधर भोजन बनाकर साधु ने वृद्धा को बुलाकर कहा- उनका भोजन बन गया है। तुम अपने पुत्र को पुकारो ताकि वह भी आकर भोग लगा ले। इस पर वृद्धा बोली- उसका नाम लेकर मुझे और कष्ट न दें। लेकिन जब साधु महाराज नहीं माने तो वृद्धा ने अपने पुत्र को आवाज लगाई। वह अपनी माँ के पास आ गया। अपने पुत्र को जीवित देख वृद्धा को बहुत आश्चर्य हुआ और वह स...
