Pandit Ravi Shankar's influence on Beatles

By AP: Pt Ravi Shankar, the sitar virtuoso who became a hippie musical icon of the 1960s after hobnobbing with the Beatles and who introduced traditional Indian ragas to Western audiences over an eight-decade career, has died. He was 92. Labeled "the godfather of world music" by George Harrison, Shankar helped millions of classical, jazz and rock lovers discover the centuries-old traditions of Indian music. He also pioneered the concept of the rock benefit with the 1971 Concert For Bangladesh. To later generations, he was known as the estranged father of popular American singer Norah Jones. As early as the 1950s, Shankar began collaborating with and teaching some of the greats of Western music, including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. He played well-received shows in concert halls in Europe and the United States, but faced a constant struggle to bridge the musical gap between the West and the East. Describing an early Shankar tour in 1957, Time magazine said "U.S. audiences were receptive but occasionally puzzled." His close relationship with Harrison, the Beatles lead guitarist, shot Shankar to global stardom in the 1960s. Harrison had grown fascinated with the sitar. He played the instrument, with a Western tuning, on the song Norwegian Wood, but soon sought out Shankar, already a musical icon in India, to teach him to play it properly. The pair spent weeks together, starting the lessons at Harrison's house in England and then moving to a ho...

Patna, Jun 13 (PTI) Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday denied the allegations of former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey who claimed that the micro-blogging site had received requests from the Indian government to block several accounts. Prasad, a former Union IT and communications minister, also lashed out at the Congress for doing politics on the "sacked" CEO of the company. "No threat was issued to Twitter. We did, however, flag anti-India activities being entertained on the micro-blogging site", Prasad told reporters. "We did raise objections to Twitter timelines teeming with footage of the Tricolour being pulled down at the Red Fort and police personnel being beaten up", said Prasad, in an oblique reference to unsavory events that took place during agitations against farm laws. "We pointed out that the act was no less outrageous than the siege of Capitol Hill for which Twitter had shown sensitivity", said the BJP leader. "There were also instances of unverified accounts of people not living in the country engaging in anti-India activities. We had requested that they act against such users", said Prasad.

When Norah Jones spoke about her ‘complicated’ relationship with father Pt Ravi Shankar: ‘It was challenging…’

• • • • When Norah Jones spoke about her 'complicated' relationship with father Pt Ravi Shankar: 'It was challenging...' When Norah Jones spoke about her ‘complicated’ relationship with father Pt Ravi Shankar: ‘It was challenging…’ Grammy award-winning artiste Norah Jones did not always share a warm equation with her venerated musician father Pt Ravi Shankar, but the pair patched things up as Norah grew older. The late sitar player and composer Pandit Ravi Shankar was a legend in his field who had not only played Woodstock in the summer of 1960s, but had influenced Beatles band member and musician George Harrison greatly. Winner of five Grammys, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 55th Grammys, Ravi Shankar was a force to be reckoned with. In time, his two talented daughters, sitar player Anoushka Shankar and jazz singer Norah Jones, made a name for themselves in the music industry too. Norah happens to be a nine-time Grammy award winner, while Anoushka too has been nominated for the prestigious award in the past. However, for a long period of time, Norah did not exactly share the warmest relationship with her famous father. Shankar never married Jones’ mother and the couple separated when Norah was very young. After being distant from his life for so long, Jones finally reached out to him when she turned 18. But even though they managed to stay in touch after that, the relationship took a more solid turn much later. Speaking about it to Vogue during the pande...
