'Purusha Pretham' Malayalam web series review

Purusha Pretham (Malayalam) • Cast: Darshana Rajendran, Prasanth Alexander, Jagadish, Geethi Sangeetha, Mala Parvathy, Devaki Rajendran, James Elia, Shiny Sara, Jolly Chirayath, and Sanju Sivaram • Director: Krishand • Producers: Mankind Cinema, Symmetry Cinema, and Einstein Media • Music: Ajmal Hasbulla • Runtime: 2 hours 32 minutes • OTT platform: Sony Liv The title of Krishand’s latest directorial, Purusha Pretham (Male Ghost) and the trailer give us the impression that the story revolves around a male ghost and its backstory. However, much to our surprise, this is not a horror film. Instead, this is a neo-noir cop drama which is uncommon in Malayalam cinema. The movie revolves around a male dead body which the cops refer to as “ Pretham” (ghost). The story deals with the unidentified dead bodies that go missing after they are buried in the low-lying areas of Ernakulam district due to the unavailability of crematoriums. This is director Krishand’s third feature film after his Kerala State Film Award-winning (2022) flick Aavasavyuham (Habitat). An unexplored theme A poster of ‘Purusha Pretham’. (SonyLIV/Twitter) Set in 2017, Purusha Pretham is a hilarious ride of events that happen in the lives of three persons: Super Sebastian (Prasanth Alexander), Dileep (Jagadish), and Susanna (Darshana Rajendran). However, these comic events are presented in a unique way which is new to Malayali audiences. The movie takes us directly into the story where a dead body is found in a riv...

Purusha Pretham movie review: Aavasavyuham director Krishand is back to amaze us once more

Don’t we all occasionally get the feeling that nothing going on around us makes sense? That everything is so random, yet so in sync… Sometimes this chaos feels dreamlike, sometimes nightmarish. They are not lifelike, though, that much is evident. Purusha Pretham, directed by Krishand who also helmed the acclaimed Aavasavyuham (2022), offers a voyage through such phantasmagorical images. Purusha Pretham is a tale that centres on a male corpse, as suggested by the title. Although the word ‘pretham’ is literally translated as ‘ghost’, the Kerala police use it as an official term for a corpse. Set in 2017, before the pandemic outbreak and even before the devastating floods of 2018, the film opens with a scene showing civil police officer Dileep (Jagadish) enjoying a couple of drinks in a bar. He is chatting about various crooks with the bartenders. But, the conversation suddenly shifts to Chelanallur sub-inspector Sebastian, aka “Super” Sebastian (Prasanth Alexander). He is a “ruthless”, “righteous” cop whom the criminals “fear”. The viewers, however, soon get to know the truth behind these tales and realise that, despite how he would like to be seen, he is not precisely like Bharathchandran IPS. Most of the anecdotes about him are his own (exaggerated) recountings of the actual occurrences, which reminds one of the running jokes on Army men that begin with “When I was in Dehradun…” Purusha Pretham quickly switches its focus to the main plot as soon as a group of people spot a...

Purusha Pretham (2023)

Director Krishand outdoes himself once again in his third outing which centres around a loophole within the justice system. Purusha Pretham is such an outstanding package of a film - it has incredible performances, unique shots and camera angles, a fantastic score (by Ajmal Hasbullah), humour that arises organically within the screenplay, and even elements of a procedural thriller. In a style that worked wonders in Aavasavyuham, Krishand his writer Ajith Haridas put together a biting satire on the police and judicial systems, delivering comedy, thrills, and drama in equal measure. Purusha Pretham marks Krishand's direct entry into the commercial side of cinema, and without a doubt, this would have absolutely worked in theatres, probably emerging a sleeper hit. I can't help but the laud the ENTIRE CAST - special mentions to Prashant Alexander, Jagadeesh, Jeo Baby, Darshana, and Devaki - for delivering brilliant performances. Those quick cuts (of hospital reports & bills, FIR copies, engagement invites, and newspaper clippings) were a nice touch, adding important details in such a diminutive way. The green and red colours (as seen on the poster) are prominent especially in the night shots, giving the film a neo-noir treatment. There's also the unconventional placement of characters on either edges of the frame. The attempt to create a distinct audio-visual palette is quite evident and the hip-hop & synth-infused music, I thought, was a terrific decision. I look forward to th...

Purusha Pretham review: Darshana Rajendran & Krishand give us a darkly funny, realistic police procedural

Super Sebastian (Alexander Prasanth) in Purusha Pretham is the kind of unreliable narrator who tests your patience and makes you want to tear your hair out. Sebastian is a policeman – but not of the efficient variety. Rather, he’s representative of the kind of policemen in real life who bungle their cases all the time. He lives with his abusive, wheelchair-bound mother and is romancing a woman whose police complaint he’s meant to be investigating. In his imagination, though, Sebastian is a rockstar cop, and that’s the version that he likes to project to those around him. Directed by Krishand of Aavasavyuham (2022) fame, Purusha Pretham (written by Ajith Haridas and based on a story by Manu Thodupuzha) revolves around an unidentified male body that’s discovered in the wetlands of Kochi. Now this is a huge inconvenience for the police force – they vaguely feel bad for the dead man but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s now a headache for them. In a hilarious scene, cops from two different stations stand on either bank of the water body, hoping for the tide to carry the corpse in the opposite direction. From jurisdictional politics to dealing with superiors and family problems, Krishand humanises the police force even as they repeatedly fail to do their job. If you want a one-line plot, Purusha Pretham is about how Super Sebastian finally gets his orange juice. People are always offering him lemon juice or some other beverage, but what Sebastian really wants is orange jui...
