The film stars Triptii Dimri in the titular role along with Babil Khan, Amit Sial, Amit Trivedi, Girija Oak, Kausar Munir, Samir Kochhar, Swanand Kirkire, Tasveer Kamil and Varun Grover. The film has been directed by Anvitaa Dutt and produced by Karnesh Ssharma, who previously collaborated for the 2020 film Bulbbul. In a previous statement, Anvitaa said, “Karnesh and I both felt it was an important story to tell. We set it in the world of music in the late 1930s; a setting both evocative and poignant. It has been an exciting and rewarding journey to bring this story to life with Netflix as our partners. This is my second outing with them and it has been twice as much fun to create a homegrown story for audiences worldwide.” Qala is scheduled to release on December 1.

6 Varun Grover Moments From Netflix’s Qala That Will Stay With Us

Qala on Netflix is brilliant in many ways and has managed to impress the audience with its breathtaking music and impressive plot line. Helmed by Anvitaa Dutt, the film has captured emotional abuse, trauma, feminism, relationships, mental health issues, and the taste of success in a way that is aesthetically pleasing yet very intense to watch. The film features an ensemble cast of Tripti Dimri, Babil Khan, Swastika Mukherjee, and Varun Grover. The story of Qala and her musical journey to seek her mother’s affection doesn’t end very well for her. She soon loses the ability to differentiate between dreams and reality. Following Qala’s suffocating life, Varun Grover as lyricist Majrooh is the comfort in her life. We compiled a list of times when Varun Grover aka Majrooh’s presence and oh-so-amazing dialogues in Qala made our hearts melt. 1. The time he asks Qala to be real about how she feels. We see Majrooh for the first time on screen in the recording studio, as he interacts with Qala. She looks tense and the two talk about how she is doing. This scene also depicts the comfort Qala shares with Majrooh. He sweetly corrects her accent for the word khairiyat and asks her not to bottle up her emotions. 2. When Majrooh doesn’t shy away from being himself. Majrooh essays the role of a lyricist in the world of patriarchal male figures but he is nothing like them. He is progressive and his cameo is quite a revelation of its own. We see him sly his red nail paint in the film through...

Qala: Anvitaa Dutt continues making beautifully filmed bad movies for Netflix

Nearly every problem with writer-director Anvitaa Dutt’s debut film Bulbbul could be felt, all at the same time, in one scene. Framed from the perspective of Rahul Bose’s villainous Thakur, it culminated with a burst of graphic violence inflicted upon Triptii Dimri’s titular naïf. The odd move to present a woman’s brutal beatdown from the male abuser’s point-of-view aside, the scene remains memorable for Dutt’s aesthetic choices. Her decision to shoot the Thakur in slow-motion, for instance, and cutting away occasionally to capture painterly blood-spatter was excruciating to watch, and not for the right reasons. The scene literally glamourised violence, and on a subtextual level, played into archaic Also read | It’s a film that romanticises female suffering, presenting it not as a horrid truth of patriarchal society, but as a rite of passage instead. Qala, the character, is a mentally ill musician who murders an innocent boy in a sustained display of jealousy, and yet, the movie portrays her as a tragic heroine. In doing so, it not only undermines her struggles, but also reduces the story of a real historical figure to basically a plot device. The film is essentially a series of distraction tactics — immaculate frames, pretty faces in those immaculate frames, and grand music surrounding immaculate frames with pretty people in them. Your attention is repeatedly directed towards Qala’s lush cinematography and soundscape, and not towards the characters that they’re supposed t...

'Qala' Has Deeply Engaging Visuals But Ultimately Ends Up Betraying Its Audience

Qala , a new Netflix release, opens to a classical singer, Qala (Tripti Damri), who has realised her childhood dream: winning the Golden Vinyl award. She poses for photos, answers journalists’ questions, and smiles. Her bliss lasts for two minutes – and never returns for even half as long till the film gets over. Because Qala’s gender decided her fate. Her mother, Urmila (Swastika Mukherjee), gave birth to twins. The boy died; Qala survived. Since then, Urmila has defined her daughter by not who she is, but what she’s not. Not a boy. Not a man. Not capable. Not deserving. Not lovable. Not enough. Qala has fought for musical recognition – and dignity – since her teenage years. But can any acclaim substitute a mother’s love? Can even the fastest athlete outrun her shadow? Anvita Dutt’s Qala tells the story of a triumph measured in gasps of loss. The first striking feature about the drama is its structure. Qala’s past haunts her, so it makes perfect sense that this story will be told in flashbacks. Dutt cuts between the past (set in a Himachal Pradesh village) and the present (set in Calcutta’s film industry) – both in pre-Independent India – inverting narrative causality. We first find the effect and then the cause. It heightens intrigue and builds a fascinating audience-protagonist relationship. We want to unearth her secrets; she wants to bury them. Qala, for instance, loathes milk. We find out the reason much later. But that, too, isn’t the complete answer, as the climax ...
