Cricket: Trent Boult opts out of India tour, as Rachin Ravindra named in spin

The Blackcaps have included five spinners in their 15-man squad for the upcoming tour to India, while fast bowler Trent Boult and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme have opted out of the two-test series, due to the prospect of further time in quarantine. The selectors picked the experienced spin trio of Ajaz Patel, Will Somerville and Mitchell Santner, as well as potential test debutant Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips, as they look to take advantage of the slower conditions expected on the sub-continent. "Touring India is one of the greatest experiences in cricket," says coach Gary Stead. "It's fair to say we're expecting spin-friendly conditions and it's great to have a range of options in this department." Stead points out Boult has already spent about 60 days in managed isolation this year, while de Grandhomme has been on the road since May. "From talking to both players, it was clear the best option for them was to be left out of this test tour and for them to instead focus on being ready for the NZ home summer," says Stead. The tour marks the first time Phillips has been selected in the test squad, since debuting against Australia as a late replacement in 2020, when the Blackcaps camp was struck by illness on the eve of the New Year's test in Sydney. In September, Ravindra, 21, made his Blackcaps debut in a Twenty20 international against Bangladesh and although he toured England with the test side earlier this year, he has yet to appear in the longest form of the game...

As Kiwis turn to Indian spin, Mumbai welcomes home Ajaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra

If you haven’t lived in Mumbai, you won’t quite get it. If you have, you can’t ever get over it. It is a city that has more heart and soul per square foot than space for feet. Its train commute sucks the breath away from your compressed lungs while its warm embrace fills you with hope and endless possibilities. Just as the city’s relentless demands threaten to suck your resolve dry, the breaking monsoon waves on Marine Drive drench you with exhilaration. And then it finds out you have a thing for cricket. Azad. Oval. Shivaji. Or a thousand other maidans. Just walk onto one and a game will find you. There is always room for one more player, space for one more match, a vantage point for one more lover of the sport. With that step, you have crossed the rubicon, the point of no return. London may engage you, New York may intoxicate you, but Mumbai will always own you. Cricket in Mumbai makes friends of strangers, binds millionaires to the destitute, creates Tendulkars out of tiny tots with outsized bats and overpowering dreams, and transforms friendlies in gullys to World Cups at the Wankhede. Rachin Ravindra: Durham sign New Zealand all

Ravindra, 22, has played three Tests and six T20 internationals for New Zealand and has been released from their squad currently touring England. The Division Two fixture against the Pears begins at the Riverside on Sunday. • Durham sign spinner Sowter on loan for T20 Durham are fourth in the table, with one win from their seven games so far, one place below their opponents. "Rachin is a talented all-rounder and we are looking forward to having him join us for this week's County Championship fixture," said director of cricket Marcus North. "We currently have four players on England duty, which is great for Durham, but we are also suffering with some injuries therefore it is great to have been able to bring in Rachin to cover during this red ball period." Left-hander Ravindra has scored 1,886 runs in first-class cricket, including three centuries, and taken 34 wickets with his left-arm spin.

IND vs NZ 1st Test

Shreyas Iyer is the Player of the Match: It's a great feeling but winning the game would have been icing on the game. The pitch was intact but our bowlers showed great fight. My mindset was to play the sessions and play as many balls as possible. People say I am a very flamboyant player but the situation required me to play longer. So I played for the time. I am really proud the way we came out from a difficult position. I am really happy with the overall performance of the team. The pressure is always there, they had a great start and played out the first two session really well but we bounced back. Ajinkya Rahane: [on the timing of the declaration] Not really, we tried our best. They played really well. I think the way we came back in the second session was good. The fast bowlers too bowled really well. We wanted to get that partnership going, put some runs on board. Saha and Axar batted really well. Before that Shreyas and Ashwin's partnership was crucial. We wanted to bowl four overs yesterday and 90-95 in all. [on chat with the umpires towards the end] It was about the light. I think the umpires made the right call regarding light. [On having three spinners] Sometimes it feels, am I giving Ashwin too few overs? Am I bowling Axar too much? I am really happy for Shreyas, the way he has worked on his game. Virat will come back for the Mumbai Test. I will not make any comments, the management will take the call. Kane Williamson: It has been touch and go around this time t...

Tough To Bounce Back After Being Bowled Out For 60

New Zealand are well aware that it is extremely tough to bounce back after collapsing to 62 in the first innings but young all-rounder Rachin Ravindra promised his team would put up a fight on day four of the second Test against India. The Indian-origin Ravindra once again showed resistance (2 batting off 23 balls) with Henry Nicholls (36 batting off 86 balls) to see off the day with 140/5, even as India stood on the cusp of a series-winning second Test. "It's always tough being bowled out for 60, a lot of things went wrong," said the 22-year-old after the end of third day's play. "We all strive to be better. We tried to put that sort of stuff behind. It was not our best performance but we knew we have got a second innings and we'll keep fighting from there." "It's important for this game to learn from what you've done and move on to the next thing, not necessarily dwelling on what's happened," he said. Ravindra also bagged three wickets including that of Indian skipper Virat Kohli who made a painstaking 36 before he played one to his stumps off the left-arm spinner. Asked whether how much of his bowling carried into his batting, he said: "I don't think I carried too much." "I think I carried an understanding of the surface and what I was doing from when I was bowling to adopting a gameplan. It's important, we keep our intent high. Get into good positions and smother the ball nicely." Ravindra played a steely 18 off 91 balls under fading lights to help New Zealand eke out ...

Meet Ajaz Patel, Rachin Ravindra

Dubai: The legacy of players of Indian origin turning out for New Zealand in top flight cricket is nothing new. Ajaz Patel, the left-arm spinner who has been around for a while and young batting allrounder Rachin Ravindra are two such members of the current squad - hoping to break into the playing XI in the two-Test series which starts in Kanpur on Thursday. Patel, the bearded spinner coached by Dipak Patel, is palpably excited to be back in the country of his birth where he was born in Mumbai and stayed there till the age of eight years. ‘‘India is India. You have got to visit the country and see the hustle and bustle - it’s about the organised chaos here,’’ said the 33-year-old from Kanpur. A crafty bowler who has picked up 26 wickets from his nine Tests so far, Patel hasn’t bowled in first-class cricket since June due to injury but now has a bucket list - that of making it to the playing XI at least in the second Test in Mumbai. “I have been to parts of India now that I haven’t really seen before. It’s a bit of a shame that we can’t really get out and experience India but that’s the nature of the world at the moment,’’ he told New Zealand Cricket. The conditions in the upcoming two Tests will be like chalk-and-cheese from their last meeting in the World Test Championship final in Southampton, where the Kiwis had gone in with a four-pronged pace attack as India played two spinners in Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja much against popular wisdom. The visitors have had a loo...

Another Kiwi of Indian origin, Ravindra is a rookie allrounder with a mature head on his young shoulders. Since making his first-class debut a little over two years ago, on an A tour against Pakistan in the UAE, Ravindra has racked up impressive numbers as a top-order batsman with three first-class centuries and nine half-centuries in 26 games. At the age of 16, he was the youngest kiwi to take part in the 2016 U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. Also a handy left-arm spinner, Ravindra was born to Indian parents in Wellington and caught the fancy of New Zealand Cricket’s talent spotters since his Und...
