I played around with the Android version for a bit, and I managed to tune into stations from all across the United States, as well as to a few stations in South American and European countries. Welcome to Radio Garden, free from the internet’s sin

It’s difficult to pick just one thing to hate about the internet, but if I had to, I’d say it was how overwhelmingly relevant everything is. Everywhere I turn online I see content I should click on. Advice for the stressed, advice for the sleepless; news of impending horrors, both environmental and political; pictures of friends and pictures of strangers who feel like friends even though they’re not (but I click all the same). The modern web has become a machine for trapping attention, and it feels like hell. I blame myself for this constant need to click (though God knows I also blame, in no particular order, my job, the modern workplace, and capitalism in general) but I think everyone knows the feeling. And if they’ve been around long enough, they know that the web wasn’t always this way. Before the money and the apps and the algorithms moved in, there was more ... amateurism. Exploring online felt unguided and adventurous. You’d stumble on corners of the web that had nothing to do with you or your interests. Places that didn’t care for your attention and therefore didn’t cater to it. It was an escape. More and more recently, I find myself looking for ways to recapture this feeling. Often it feels like a bullshit enterprise. This sort of digital archaeology was is now! Don’t over-think it and try to differentiate!”) But sometimes, you can still find gems of unfamiliarity, and I’d like to introduce you to my latest favorite: Radio Garden is, essentially, Google Earth for ...

Listen to the world: Radio Garden app brings stations to millions in lockdown

One of the app’s founders, Jonathan Puckey, said he was confused as to where the sudden interest has come from. “To be honest, I don’t know … We do go viral every now and again, but this is the largest spike we have had to date,” he said. The popularity appears to have come from people sharing the platform with friends on social media websites. The app, the brainchild of the Amsterdam-based studios Puckey and Moniker. launched in 2016. It was originally commissioned as a temporary project by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision as part of research looking at how radio has fostered “transnational encounters”. It started out as a a web-only offering, but has been available as an app since 2018. The concept is simple: you look around a global map and select an area that interests you. When you click on that region and select a green dot signifying a radio station, the feed will automatically start playing, telling you the name of the station you are listening and where it is. You can listen to stations from all over, as far and wide as Sicily in Italy and Texas in the US. The platform gets hundreds of submissions every week and has grown its collection of live radio stations from 7,000 to more than 30,000. Puckey said: “We had the idea to make a modern version of the old world receiver radio sets … We hoped to recreate this magical feeling of travelling across the globe blindly, relying on the sense of hearing and the knowledge of location to bring these live radio ...

It reads as follows: " Dear listener, As you may have noticed, access to international radio stations (meaning: stations outside the United Kingdom) has been restricted for users of Radio Garden in the United Kingdom. This restriction (due to licensing reasons) was initially referred to as a temporary measure, but unfortunately the restriction must be extended for an indefinite period due to copyright and neighbouring rights related matters that require clarification. Considering our main goal of providing our listeners a ‘global’ radio experience, it goes without saying that we strongly regret that we had to take this step."
