Uddhav Thackeray to visit Barsu today; police presence increased

A large number of policemen have been deployed in and around Barsu village in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, the Orders prohibiting unlawful assembly too have been imposed under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the area, he said. Supporters of the refinery project have also organised a rally in the vicinity at the same time, the official said. Mr. Thackeray had planned to hold a rally in Barsu-Solgaon area earlier but was denied permission. Besides district police, additional personnel from Sindhudurg, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Pune and Thane and companies of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) have been deployed in Rajaput taluka, the official said. Protests broke out at Barsu after the work for soil testing began at the site last month, with a section of locals opposing the project on the grounds that it will adversely affect the fragile biodiversity of the coastal Konkan region and also hit their livelihood. The project has also pitted the State's Eknath Shinde-BJP government against the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress. The much-talked about Ratnagiri super refinery project along the coastal Konkan coast of Maharashtra has once again landed in a controversy with locals taking to the streets during the soil-testing surveys. The Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (RRPCL), which is expected to come up at Barsu-Solgaon in Rajapur tehsil of Ratnagiri district was shifted from nearby Nanar site. In February 2024, a local journalist Shashikant Varishe was mowed by an SUV belonging to real estate dealer Pandharinath Amberkar, who has been arrested by the Ratnagiri police for murder. Why are villagers in Konkan opposing the proposed multi-billion dollar Ratnagiri Refinery project in Maharashtra? The multi-billion dollar project is touted as the world’s largest single location refinery complex, Mr. Samant informed Mr. Pawar that the Shinde-Fadnavis government would not forcibly proceed with the project until the misconceptions of the protesters were resolved. “We will move forward only after taking the protesters into confidence. We are ready to discuss all issues pertaining to the project,” Mr. Samant said.
