The experienced duo of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara strung a small partnership before the latter had a Gill-like brain fade and left the ball alone. While Kohli got an absolute peach of a delivery from Mitchell Starc as the ball rose awkwardly to catch the batter off-guard, who could only glove it to slips. Pant, who is out of action for the foreseeable future since his car accident in December 2022, is India's third-highest run-getter in WTC 2021/23 despite playing a lot fewer matches than his teammates. Given how Travis Head batted India desperately needed someone like Pant to give it back to the opposition, however, so far Australia have been too good in all three departments. Ravindra Jadeja did play an attacking note but just before the end of the day's play, he got out to Nathan Lyon, which gave India an R Ashwin reminder once again. Ajinkya Rahane was set, however, Team India need a herculean effort from the middle and lower-middle order just to avoid the follow-on first.
