Udaipur: Forty-year-old Yashoda came out of her house in Udaipur’s Sector 14 Wednesday, dressed like a bride. She had on the same lehenga that she wore more than two decades ago, when she married Kanhaiya Lal Teli. Her face radiated pain, and anger. Just a day before, Kanhaiya Lal — a tailor by profession — was brutally murdered, allegedly by two Muslim men who sought to punish him for a purported social media post in support of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who made controversial comments against Prophet Muhammad last month. Identified by police as Mohammad Riyaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammed, both accused were arrested late Tuesday night. The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the case. One of the accused in the Udaipur murder case, Riyaz Attari, used to raise donations for Dawat-e Islami and also used to urge others to join the group, his neighbour said. Riyaz Attari and Ghouse Mohammad have been named as prime accused in the Udaipur murder case that happened on June 28. A Hindu shopkeeper, Kanhaiyalal, was murdered by the duo in Rajasthan's Udaipur for allegedly sharing a social media post supporting suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Ghous had gone to Saudi Arabia in 2013 and 2019 and to Karachi, Pakistan to attend religious discourse in Dawat-e-Islami in 2014. Both the killers were followers of Dawat-e-Islami, a movement that follows only Ahmed Raza Khan, the founder of Barelvi movement in the Indian sub-continent. Raza Khan was born in Bareilly in the 19th century. Attari had also joined the SDPI, the political arm of the rabid PFI group, in 2019. Interrogation reveals that it was Ghous Mohammed who had volunteered to kill tailor Kanhiya Lal and used two of the six butcher knives crafted by Riyaz Attari for the crime. The four remaining knives have been recovered from local butcher Mohsin Murgewala with whom Riyaz had deposited all the six knives.
