ITP Injection Dosing & Administration

Nplate ® is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist indicated for the treatment of thrombocytopenia in adult patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who have had an insufficient response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy. Nplate ® is indicated for the treatment of thrombocytopenia in pediatric patients 1 year of age and older with ITP for at least 6 months who have had an insufficient response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy. Nplate ® is not indicated for the treatment of thrombocytopenia due to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or any cause of thrombocytopenia other than ITP. Nplate ® should be used only in patients with ITP whose degree of thrombocytopenia and clinical condition increase the risk for bleeding. (roe mi PLOE stim) Trade Name: Nplate TM Romiplostimis the generic name for the trade name drug Nplate. In some cases, health care professionals may use the trade name Nplate when referring to the generic drug name Romiplostim. Drug Type: Romiplostim is a biologic response modifier. It is classified as a colony stimulating factor. (For more detail, see "How this drug works" section below). What Romiplostim Is Used For: • Romiplostim is used for the treatment of thrombocytopenia (low platelets) in patients with chronic immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) who have had insufficient response to corticosteroids, immune globulin, or splenectomy. • Nplate is not indicated to normalize platelet counts. Note: If a drug has been approved for one use, physicians may elect to use this same drug for other problems if they believe it may be helpful. However, Romiplostim is administered through the NEXUS program, which requires monitoring of the efficacy and use of Romiplostim on a periodic basis. This is a blood condition that occurs when you don’t have enough platelets. A healthcare provider will give you this injection in a hospital or clinic setting. What is this medication? ROMIPLOSTIM (roe mi PLOE stim) helps your body make more platelets. This medicine is used to treat low platelets caused by chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) or a bone marrow syndrome caused by radiation sickness. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions. What Is Nplate? Nplate (romiplostim) is an Fc-peptide fusion protein (peptibody), a man-made form of a protein that increases production of platelets (blood-clotting cells) in the body, used to prevent bleeding episodes in people with chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a bleeding condition caused by a lack of platelets in the blood. Nplate is usually given after other medications have been tried without successful treatment of symptoms. What Are Side Effects of Nplate? Common side effects of Nplate include: • headache, • joint or muscle pain, • dizziness, • heartburn, • abdominal pain, • stomach upset, • tingling or numbness in hands or feet, • trouble sleeping (insomnia), or • pain in your arms/legs/shoulder Dosage for Nplate The initial dose for Nplate is 1 mcg/kg based on actual body weight.
