‘The return of banditry’: Russian car industry buckles under sanctions

E ldar Gadzhiev’s heart sank when he heard the sputtering from the engine of his Skoda one day in April. Gadzhiev, who owns a fleet of four cars that he leases as taxicabs in Moscow, knew it was a terrible and expensive time for a breakdown. Prices for spare parts, if you even could find them, had spiralled out of control since Dealerships were useless, he said. His car parts shop told him that the waiting list was months long, time he could not wait to repair his vehicle. So he tried posting on a public chat. That’s when his phone began to “explode”, he said. He received tens of calls, some from rough-sounding “dealers” offering to meet or giving him vague promises to get the parts he needed. “It’s full-on speculation,” he said. “There are no more spare parts. So the prices are either way too high, you could almost [throw away] the car, or you think: is this illegal?” He suspected that many of the parts he was offered had been stolen. “It’s the return of banditry,” he added. Few sectors of the Russian economy are feeling the strain of the country’s near total isolation more than the automotive industry, where parts for new and used vehicles are in short supply. Gadzhiev said he ended up paying eight times the old rate for his repairs. Others say prices have jumped tenfold. Aleksei Atapov, the owner of a car repair firm, said: “We are in a pretty sad situation in terms of car repair and maintenance in Moscow. The central warehouses closed at the end of February, and even t...

Soviet cars: 6 brands that made history in the Soviet Union

When you think of some of the classic vehicles to emerge from the Soviet era, it’s easy to build an image of a lumbering stereotype of Soviet cars; a dull, functional car that looked and felt remarkably similar to other models. While that may be true to some extent – it has to be said that most Soviet car models weren’t exactly exciting – there was much more to Soviet car production than this. Their design reflects a fusion of Western car design and something truly Soviet, and it’s clear that cars made in the Soviet Union are real collector’s items today and will hold an enduring fascination. In this article, we’ll round up some of the significant Soviet car manufacturers and models, taking you on tour through the Lada, the Volga, the Zil, the Uaz, the Gaz, and the Mosckvich. Gaz Due to its undisputed off-road and simple and rugged looks, the Jeep Willys qualified as the iconic vehicle of the American Army during the Second World War. However, after the war, the Soviets could not remain indifferent to this new type of vehicle, so they developed the GAZ 69, produced between 1953 and 1975 under different names (GAZ, UAZ, and ARO). Like the LuAZ 969 M, the GAZ 69 was a 4WD vehicle initially created for the Red Army. It had a 2.1-liter engine capable of producing 54 bhp, a maximum speed of 56 mph, and an 11 mpg fuel consumption rate. Not exactly a high-tech piece of machinery, even for those days, but it was a great success, being supplied to all Eastern European armies, expor...

Kremlin tries to look immune to sanctions, but new Russian cars show cracks in the façade

A Russian car company stymied by international sanctions over the country’s Avtovaz halted the production of its Lada brand in March and furloughed many of its workers because it was not able to acquire certain parts due to the sanctions. But, after the Russian government's decision to slash safety regulations, assembly lines roared back to life. “This is a very retrograde step,” said David Ward, executive president of Global New Car Assessment Programme, a group aimed at developing car safety standards worldwide. He said it was “very sad” and "ironic" that Russia had rolled back safety features, especially as the country serves as the vice-chair of the United Nations' World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations. “How can they claim to be leading on road safety globally?” Ward said, calling it a "a very symbolic step backwards" for the country that had hosted the first major conference on road safety in 2009. Foreign policy experts interviewed by NBC News said it was a classic move from Moscow’s It’s a hard-nosed political calculus by the Kremlin, said Jeffrey Edmonds, who served as the director for Russia on the National Security Council in the Obama administration. “This definitely points toward a willingness on the Russian government’s part to really sacrifice quality goods and safety in the name of this invasion,” he said. “For domestic audiences and abroad, they do want to make it look as though the sanctions are not really having the impact they are actually...
