WTC Final 2023: Sachin Tendulkar surprised that India dropped Ravichandran Ashwin

Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar was surprised that Ravichandran Ashwin was dropped for the World Test Championship Final 2023 where India were defeated comprehensively by Australia. Upon the conclusion of the Test on Sunday, Tendulkar took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the omission of Ravichandran Ashwin from the Playing XI. India missed out on being crowned with the Test mace as Australia won the WTC Final in London by a margin of 209 runs. India lost the final for the second consecutive time after getting beaten by New Zealand in 2021. Tendulkar noted that Steve Smith and Travis Head’s partnership in the first innings was where India lost their grip on this final. The duo’s partnership meant Australia scored 469 runs in the first innings and maintained their supremacy over their opponents throughout the match. MORE: Ashwin would have capitalized against five left-handers of Australia: Tendulkar Ashwin is currently the No. 1 ranked bowler in Test cricket. However, he was dropped from the WTC Final playing XI by the Indian team management since they felt the conditions favoured pace bowling. Congratulations to Team Australia on winning the Five of Australia’s top eight batsmen in the batting order were left-handed. Tendulkar, like many others, believed Ashwin should not have been dropped. “Like I had mentioned before the match, skillful spinners don’t always rely on turning tracks, they use drift in the air and bounce off the surface to disguise their variati...

Virat Kohli Breaks Sachin Tendulkar's Long

Virat Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record in ICC knockout matches in the 2023 World Test Championship final. Chasing a total of 444, India are 164/3 at stumps and need 280 more runs. Kohli has won two ICC tournaments, both in the 50-over format, as he was a vital member of India's 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy-winning teams. Kohli is yet to get a century in any knockout game but has got half-centuries in all four T20 World Cup knockout games he has played, as well as the semi-finals of the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy. He was also India's highest run-getter in the 2013 Champions Trophy final, in which India beat England, while also playing an important knock of 35 in the 2011 World Cup final. Talking about today's match, Kolhi is batting not-out at 44 at stumps on Day 4. India need 280 more runs on Day 5 to seal a historic title with seven wickets in hand. Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli have put up a 67-run partnership after India lost their top three after a bright start in the big chase of 444.

Sachin Tendulkar reflects on India's WTC 2023 Final defeat: Fail to understand R Ashwin's exclusion

Ashwin was not picked as India went in with 4 pacers and a lone spinner in Ravindra Jadeja for the summit clash against Australia. India did not play R Ashwin in the 5-match series in England in 2021-22 as they went in with a full-strength pace attack that also had a fully-fit Jasprit Bumrah. Despite not having Bumrah for the WTC final due to an injury, India went ahead and dropped their leading wicket-taker from the current cycle and picked 4 pacers, two of them -- Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav - who missed matches in the latter stages of IPL 2023 due to injury concerns. India won the toss on the opening day of the WTC 2023 final and opted to field, keeping in mind the overcast conditions in London. However, the sun came out shining bright after an hour into the day's play and it remained sunny throughout the remainder of the Test match. India were not able to step up with the ball in the first innings as they allowed Australia to post a huge first innings total of 469. India played a catch-up game from then on as the top-order failed in the first innings and India managed to avoid follow-on after Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur's heroic fifties. India conceded a 173-run first innings lead and Australia piled up pressure by posting 270 for 8 in the second innings and set India a target of 444. "I fail to understand the exclusion of @ashwinravi99 in the playing XI, who is currently the number one Test bowler in the world," Sachin Tendulkar said in a tweet after India lo...
