With the Palkhi of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj set to arrive in Pune on Monday afternoon, the Pune police have deployed around 7,000 personnel and a security cover comprising bomb detection squad, quick response teams and anti-theft squads, aided by a network of CCTV and drone-mounted cameras. Lakhs of warkaris (pilgrims) and devotees are expected to walk along the processions as part of the centuries-old tradition. The Palkhi or the procession of the palanquins carrying the Paduka or revered symbolic footwear of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj started their three-week-long journeys on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, from the temple towns of Dehu and Alandi and are slated to reach Pandharpur on June 29. The temple contains as idol of Saint Tukaram. Tukaram Pagdi During the inaugural session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given a special Tujaram Pagdi. It has been designed by Murudkar Zendewale, a turban making firm in Pune. ‘Abhang’ (verses) is also written on the pagdi. Background Tukaram was born in modern-day Maharashtra. Tukaram Bolhoba Ambile was his complete name. Year of birth and death of the Sant has been a subject of research and dispute. He was either born in 1598 or 1608 in Dehu village, near Pune. He was born to Kanakai and Bolhoba. His family owned a retailing & money-lending business and were also engaged in agriculture & trade. Sant Tukaram was a prominent Varkari Sant (Saint) and spiritual poet from Maharashtra during a Bhakti movement in India. Birth and Early Life Tukaram was born in the small village of Dehu in the West Indian state of Maharashtra to Bolhoba and Kanakai a couple belonging to the lower Sudra class. His real name is Tukaram Vhilhoba Aambe. Rather, in accord with another tradition in India of assigning the epithet "sant" (???) to persons regarded as thoroughly saintly, Tukaram is commonly known in Maharashtra as Sant Tukaram (??? ???????). He is known as Bhakta Tukaram to southern Indian people. He had two other brothers. Despite their lower class status the family was well to do and enjoyed good social standing in the village. Tukaram's troubles started with the illness of his father, due to which he had to start supporting his family at the tender age of thirteen. Shortly thereafter, both his parents died. Tukaram's problems only mounted; death of his family members and economic hardship seemed to plague him. Scholars assign various birth years to Sant Tukaram: 1577, 1598, 1608 and 1609 CE. The year of Sant Tukaram's death —1650 CE— is much more certain. Family Life Tukaram was married twice, his first wife Rakhumabai died in 1602 in her early youthdue to starvation during a famine, his second wife Jijabai or Avali as she was called, was much younger than his first had been and had little patience with his devotion and for God and she nagged him continuously. Context • Delegates, attending a three days meet - G20 Digital Economy Working Group Conference, in Pune, had an opportunity to get a first-hand glimpse of Warkari community’s palkhi from Pune Municipal Corporation’s special pavilion. • The 800-year-old palkhi of Sant Tukaram is associated with Warkari community. Other Details • This special pavilion is located near Sant Tukaram Maharaj Paduka Mandir. • Apart from Guardian Minister Chandrakantada Patil, Many officials such as Commissioner of Police, Collector, Municipal Additional Commissioner were present. • As a welcome gesture, delegates were adorned tulsimala (a basil beads string); warkari uparane (traditional attire), and received tika on their forehead at the start of ceremony. • The excitement of delegates was visible in their participation in the fugadi dance and in clicking pictures of carrying tulsi plants on their heads.
