Prime Minister Modi dedicated the Sardar Sarovar Dam to the people of The project was an “engineering miracle” and a “symbol of India’s new and emerging power”, he said. The controversial project on the Narmada River, in the country’s western state of Gujarat, will provide power and water to three big states – Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The dam is the second-biggest dam in the world. The project has been beset by controversy since the laying of the foundation stone by then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1961. Before the inauguration, Modi said in a tweet, “This project will benefit lakhs of farmers and help fulfil people’s aspirations.” The dam is expected to provide water to 9,000 villages and the power generated will be shared among the three states. The Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), led by social activist Medha Patkar, has been protesting the project, raising several environmental concerns. Patkar, who staged several hunger-strikes against the protest, told Caravan magazine the Indian government is yet to resettle a majority of the people displaced by the dam project, a claim denied by authorities. The Sardar Sarovar project was a vision of the first deputy prime minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The foundation stone of the project was laid out by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on April 5, 1961.On occasion of his 67th birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river. The project which has been the subject of much controversy for decades now is reported to be one of the largest dams in the world. Having a length of 1.2 kms and a depth of 163 metres, the dam is expected to be shared among the three states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

This dam came up first and then cam the statue of Unity. This dam was the vistion of Sardar Patel. When one visits Statue of Unity this spot is included in the free list. There is a free bus ride upto this spot. A local guide explains the features of this dam. This dam also generates electricity. During night time it is lit up and provides an excellent facade. During monsoons when all the gates are open it provides a spectacular view. This dam is also visible from the viewing gallery of Statue of Unity. I visited in December hence the water was not flowing from the dam. However at anytime during the year do visit in the evening after laser show at SOU. It has a light and music show which covers the entire dam and is really mesmerizing. You can view the same from Unity Glow garden for better experience. There are multiple view points to see the dam. I was able to see from three different places-One is dam view point 3 near jungle safari, had to take electric rickshaw to reach there. Another is on the way to valley of flowers. And third is near cactus garden, The viewpoint 3 was best and closest though. You can see the light show on the dam in evening very nicely from Unity Glow garden. Building this Dam was Sardar Patel's Vision and Dream that unfortunately took multiple decades to complete. Sardar Patel Zoological Park is a newly inaugurated zoo situated in Kevadia, a town in the Narmada district of Gujarat. Located in the vicinity of the majestic Statue of Unity, this tremendous establishment hosts about 170 different species of wildlife from all across the globe, is home to a wide range of plant life and has a breathtaking aviary inhabited by endemic as well as foreign varieties of birds. The Royal Bengal Tigers, Zebras, Leopards etc. are only a few examples of wild animals one can explore here. The park was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31st October 2020, commemorating the birth anniversary of the much revered leader of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It is spread over a vast expanse of land about 1,300 acres in size.
