Who is Savitribai Phule – Learn About the First Female Teacher in India

Today, on 3 January 2022, we are celebrating the 191st birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule. She was the first modern Indian woman to have become a teacher and educated girls at a time when girls were not even allowed inside a school. Today, as we celebrate Savitribai Phule Jayanti, let’s learn more about her and her struggle towards educating girls in India. The social stigma The 1800s were a time of struggle for women in India. They would be married off early, education was off-limits and because of high mortality rates, most of them would become widows even before reaching adulthood. And while it was such a tough time to be a woman, it was even harder to be a woman who wanted to reform society. Savitribai was born in that era (3 January, 1831) in the village of Naigaon in Satara District, Maharashtra. Experienced child marriage first hand Married off at the tender age of nine to a 13-year-old Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, Savitribai experienced what it was like to be in a child marriage. But her thirst for learning impressed her husband, who then taught her to read and write. He even pointed out her talent for poetry. This made her one of the few women at that time to be properly educated. By India Today Web Desk: Savitribai Phule played a significant role in the social reform movement, particularly in Maharashtra. Savitribai played an important role in fighting for the voice of women along with her husband Jyotirao. They also founded India's first girls' school. She not only fought against societal ills like casteism and patriarchy but also spoke about the need to educate girls. Savitri Phule also penned verses against discrimination, caste atrocities and child marriage. She devoted her life to the betterment of women's rights, status, and education. To date, millions of people are inspired by her work and contribution to society. Savitribai died on March 10th, 1897 due to the bubonic plague at the age of 66. Celebration of "Mata Savitribai Phule Jayanti"

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region. Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.
