The US Department of State has announced the launch of the Gandhi

The Gandhi-King Scholarly Exchange Initiative, which brings together 20 emerging young civic leaders from India and the United States to advance civil rights, social justice, and inclusion on the local, national, and international levels by exploring the histories and legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was announced today by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The late Honorable John Lewis championed this transaction. On June 15, 2022, the exchange will begin with a one-week virtual programme and orientation, followed by a two-week academic residence at Alabama A&M University, an HBCU, and the University of Alabama. Participants will tour civil rights sites in Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham, Alabama; Memphis, Tennessee; and Atlanta, Georgia, in addition to classroom study and debate. The Indian and American participants will meet again in India in January 2023 to visit important sites, communities, and organisations as part of their academic curriculum, which is centred on the academic themes of peace, nonviolence, and conflict resolution, and to strengthen their leadership capacities. The report concludes by explaining how the reduction in connectivity has led to the creation of echo chambers, which has fed a vicious cycle further propelling the worsening of ties. They offer a set of five policy proposals intended to interrupt this dynamic, including restoring direct connections across the two societies and resuming and expanding dialogue between the two governments.

Gandhi

I f Mahatma Gandhi (Gandhi) and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) were alive today, what advice would they offer to effectively navigate our contemporary issues? What systemic change efforts would they suggest to help our marginalized communities? This program will bring 20 ambitious, young adults together for a five-week program. We envision pondering on such questions as we teach about the legacies and lessons of Gandhi and MLK. This multifaceted program is skillfully prepared to facilitate lively debate, review lessons of history, listen to lived experiences, and offer experiential learning opportunities and art activities. Additionally, weekly developmental training sessions will (1) increase self-awareness, (2) strengthen culturally sensitive communication, and (3) improve problem-solving, leadership, and advocacy skills. In today’s world of distress, racial conflict, marginalized communities, and the on-going impact of the pandemic, this program offers necessary insight and training to develop leaders of tomorrow. We aim to advance civil rights and social justice while thematically preparing and training 20 participants (undergraduates, graduate students, young community leaders, and new K-12 educators) who want to solidify their voice, find meaning in their work, and make a difference in the lives of others. These participants will receive multidimensional preparation (achieved through curriculum, engagement with speakers, visits to historical and museum sites, lead...
