ADW: Rotifera: INFORMATION

Diversity Phylum Rotifera is comprised of two classes, Monogononta and Seisonidea, with over 2,200 currently known species. They are most commonly found in freshwater, although some species live in brackish or marine habitats, in soil, or on mosses. Rotifers may be sessile or sedentary and some species are colonial. Their bodies can be clearly divided into three regions: head, trunk, and foot, but the body surface varies widely between species, some even have spines or tubercles and/or a protective casing (lorica). Some species sexually reproduce, but parthenogenic reproduction is far more common, order ( Geographic Range Rotifers are considered broadly cosmopolitan, and are found in marine, brackish, and fresh waters throughout the world, excluding Antarctic. Several species are endemic to specific regions. A few species are known endo- or ectoparasites. ( • Habitat Regions • • • • • • Terrestrial Biomes • • • • • • • • • • Aquatic Biomes • • •...

A Morning walk inside a scrub forest

Exploring a scrub forest in Chennai Like most people we are also confined in our homes during the lockdown periods. But to be quite frank these periods gave us an opportunity to explore nearby patches of forests. Sitting in Chennai one can ask ” where is the forest in Chennai ? “. Though nothing like the The lakes in this area are the victims of sand mining. During dry season, you can see so many JCB vehicles inside the lake, so the whole lake is very uneven which makes it not a very suitable place for ducks as it lacks aquatic vegetation. A quick animal rescue ! He flew and sat on a neem tree on the roadside with a prey. We were surprised to see a bird in his claws because we always saw Shikras striking on lizards, chameleons and rodents but never on big birds. Common Mynas started circling around the Shikra and created a raucous. A garbage picker was picking trashes on roadside, with all these commotions the Shikra dropped the prey and flew away. There were many stray dogs wandering and they came near the bush. So vinod went to check the status of the prey. When Only when the bird was in Vinod’s hand I understood the real size of this Little Grebe. How tiny and cute this Little Grebe! We took the bird to the lake and dropped him near the edge. In a blink of an eye the bird dived in and her head popped up from the lake center. Our faces were full of smiles seeing her behaviour. With this small rescue, we continued our stride to the forest. The forest welcomed us with the sw...

Chaparral

North American chaparral is extremely Quercus species) and sagebrush ( Artemisia california) are the dominant plants in chaparral areas that have an average yearly rainfall of about 500 to 750 mm (20 to 30 inches). Areas with less rainfall or poorer soil have fewer, more drought-resistant shrubs such as chamise ( Adenostoma fasciculatum), Cercocarpus betuloides), red shanks( Adenostoma sparsifolium), and Arctostaphylos species). The Ceanothus or

Scrub Habitats - Titusville, Florida The Lime Trail across the Scrub in the Enchanted Forest. Paul A. Schmalzer, Plant Ecologist, Dynamac Corporation, Kennedy Space Center, FL Table of Contents Florida scrub vegetation is a rare and vanishing ecosystem. Brevard County contains regionally important scrub ecosystems; these support some of the remaining populations of the Florida Scrub-Jay ( Aphelocoma coerulescens) and other rare, threatened, and endangered species. Scrub in Brevard County has been reduced greatly by development; for example, it is estimated that in Brevard County north of Cocoa the total area of scrub decreased by 69% between 1943 and 1991. Scrub vegetation is associated with ridges of well drained to moderately well drained soils. Within Brevard County, scrub occurs on five distinct landscapes with different geologic histories and combinations of soils. These are: 1) the recent barrier islands including Cape Canaveral, 2) Merritt Island, 3) the Atlantic Coastal Ridge, 4) the Ten Mile Ridge, and 5) a small ridge in the southwest corner of the county. These areas differ in age and topography, but all have a similar ori...

Terrestrial Biomes – Environmental Biology

Figure 1. Each of the world’s eight major biomes is distinguished by characteristic temperatures and amount of precipitation. Polar ice caps and mountains are also shown. There are eight major terrestrial biomes: tropical rainforests, savannas, subtropical deserts, chaparral, temperate grasslands, temperate forests, boreal forests, and Arctic tundra. Biomes are large-scale environments that are distinguished by characteristic temperature ranges and amounts of precipitation. These two variables affect the types of vegetation and animal life that can exist in those areas. Because each biome is defined by climate, the same biome can occur in geographically distinct areas with similar climates (Figures 1 and 2). Figure 2. Precipitation and temperature are the two most important climatic variables that determine the type of biome in a particular location. Credit: “Climate influence on terrestrial biome” by Navarras is in the Public Domain, CC0 Tropical rainforests are found in equatorial regions (Figure 1) are the most biodiverse terrestrial biome. This biodiversity is under extraordinary threat primarily through logging and deforestation for agriculture. Tropical rainforests have also been described as nature’s pharmacy because of the potential for new drugs that is largely hidden in the chemicals produced by the huge diversity of plants, animals, and other organisms. The vegetation is characterized by plants with spreading roots and broad leaves that fall off throughout the y...

Plant Real Florida

These shrub dominated communities occur along the central ridge and coastal areas of Florida on deep acid sand with virtually no organic matter except for surface litter. The white and sometimes yellow sandy soils are infertile and extremely well-drained. Under natural conditions high intensity fires occur at 10 to 80 year intervals. Plants require good drainage and suffer from flooding and wet or heavy soils. They are drought and frost resistant and can endure light shade. Sand Pine Scrub has a canopy of Pinus clausa; when no pines are present, the scrub community can be viewed as a dwarf forest, where plants which are normally understory or shrubs are the tallest woody plants, and function as the canopy. There are very few grasses and some wildflowers, but these increase on the lower edges of a scrub when it grades into a scrubby flatwoods. Our most endangered plant communities with the greatest number of rare species.
