Bankim Chandra Chatterjee [Chattopadhyay] (1838–94) flourished in the so-called New Age of Bengal known popularly as the Bengal renaissance that witnessed the advent of modernity due to colonial contact and impact in post Mughal India. This modernity revealed a tension between the progressive English-educated reformers of the Brahmo Samāj.
