The diagram shows the different types of nouns and how they relate to one another. Most nouns are common nouns, referring to classes or categories of people, animals and things. Proper nouns are the names of specific people, animals and things. They are written with a capital letter at the start.

Nouns: Hindi nouns are either masculine or feminine. The grammatical gender of each noun must therefore be learned. There is no definite article ‘the’ in Hindi. Masculine nouns are of two types: those ending in a final aa in the singular which changes to ‘e’ in the plural, and all others, which are the same in singular and plural: Type 1
