Vernier calipers are the trickiest calipers to read but offer a great deal of precision. Once you learn how to read a Vernier caliper, you can easily read a digital and dial caliper. Reading a Vernier caliper is a two-step process.



Least Count. The difference between one small division on main scale division and one vernier scale division is 0.1 mm. It is called the least count (LC) of the Vernier Calipers. Least count of the Vernier Calipers can also be found as given below: L.C = 0.1mm or 0.01 cm



Main scale value / division = 1 inch : 20 divisions = 0.05″/division. Vernier scale value / division = 0.05″ : 50 divisions = 0.001″/division. The second step is to count the main and the vernier scale, then add them altogether. Main scale = −1 × 0.05″/division = −0.05″. Vernier scale = 47 × 0.001″/division = 0.047″.



Expand electronic, dial, and vernier calipers to measure larger items. Extenders have two pins that project 1/2" when installed and act as jaws for the extension. 1 1/2" extended projection pins are sold separately. Use optional center-to-center gauge pins to determine the center-to-center distance between holes.



The least count of a common scale is 0.1 cm or 1 mm. It is difficult to further subdivide it to improve the least count of the scale. A Vernier scale enables this to be achieved. Fig. 1.1. Principle: Determination of Least Count or Vernier Constant:



Formulas Used: (a) Least count of vernier caliper = the magnitude of the smallest division on the main scale / the total number of small divisions on the vernier scale. (b) Density of a rectangular body = mass/volume = m/v = m/l.b.h where m is its mass, l its length, b its breadth and h the height.



Here is the least count formula for an instrument having a secondary scale along with the main scale. This rule also can be termed as the formula of least count of vernier caliper. Formula: 2. Least Count of main scale = Value of 1 main scale division / Total main scale divisions.
