Debutant director Mathimaaran, an erstwhile assistant of filmmaker (Also read: Morbius movie review: Jared Leto's MCU vampire feels like an expensive April Fool's joke, worst Marvel film ever) Selfie movie review: GV Prakash Kumar plays a student in the movie. GV Prakash Kumar plays Kanal, a village lad who’s pushed by his father into joining an engineering course. A few weeks in, Kanal realises he needs to earn extra bucks by taking up part time jobs to meet his expenses. However, when he learns that the easy way to make quick money is by is earning commission off selling college seats, he doesn’t think twice before jumping in. Little does he realise the risk of getting his hands dirty in this business which is completely managed by Ravi Varma (Gautham Menon), a local thug who has connections far and wide. Kanal’s life turns upside down when he gets embroiled in the college admission racket. Selfie, which features GV Prakash Kumar in one of his most earnest performances in recent times, works to a large extent because it keeps its focus on the scam. If not for the racing screenplay, the film would’ve struggled to engage audiences with most of the story unfolding against a college backdrop. The choice to cast Gautham Menon as the antagonist works in the film’s favour as well. You don’t get major conflict scenes between Gautham and Prakash but the way these characters are written, make up for the major clash that’s usually awaited between the hero and villain in mainstream ...

‘Selfiee’ movie review: A captivating script drives this thrilling Akshay Kumar

‘Selfiee’ movie review: A captivating script drives this thrilling Akshay Kumar-starrer Akshay Kumar channels the swag of the superstar and imbues it with his inherent simplicity to make his character, Vijay Kumar, absolutely relatable February 24, 2023 11:48 am | Updated February 25, 2023 12:33 pm IST A high-pitched, fast-paced mass entertainer that doesn’t give up on the discerning audience, Selfiee once again proves that there is no bigger star than a coherent script. A remake of the Malayalam hit Driving Licence, writer Sachy’s story finds a new life in Bhopal where an ordinary motor vehicle inspector at the Regional Transport Office takes on a superstar after circumstances choose to play truant. When superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) lands in Bhopal for a film shoot, he finds he needs a new driving licence quickly. Om Prakash Agrawal (Emraan Hashmi), the motor vehicle inspector in charge of his application, is his fan but a misunderstanding caused by a couple of self-seeking characters leads to a public showdown between them. Prima facie, it seems like a case of much ado about nothing, an overreaction but as Selfiee unfolds it provides an interesting insight into human nature. Vijay comes across as arrogant and Om looks petty but neither of them is the villain of the piece. It is just the well-laid-out quirks of fate that makes things spiral into a riveting face-off between David and Goliath. As self-esteem and small-mindedness play out against each other, sparks f...

‘Selfie’ movie review: This GV Prakash, Gautham Menon

Tamil cinema has thrown up several campus stories. College romance? We've seen it. Hostel experiences? That too. Reminiscing about college life? Bah, been there, done that. This 'what happens after we get into college' has been chronicled in several on-screen episodes. Selfie, the latest Mathi Maaran directorial starring GV Prakash and Gautham Menon, chooses to explore the 'how we get into college' phase. Kanal (GV Prakash), from a small town, wants to get into business but his father has only one goal: to see his son as an engineer. He spends a lot of money, even pawning some of his wife's jewels to ensure that Kanal gets a seat in a prestigious college in Chennai. What happens when Kanal realises that the money paid for his seat was actually because of many middlemen and agents involved in the process? Storyline: An angry engineering student gets entangled in a college admissions scam And so, sensing a lot of money in it, he becomes an agent himself. What happens when he crosses paths with Ravi Varma (Gautham Menon), whose word is final for everyone involved in the business of education? As a subject idea, Selfie delves into a subject that is rarely in the public eye, leave alone films. Mathi Maran deserves credit for not only taking it up, but also keeping the screenplay as racy as possible so as to not miss audience interest. However, he misses out on a few counts, especially because of a 'filmi first half' that features a romance that has no place here, and performanc...
