Serena Williams

A rousing acclamation soon rang around the stadium for a woman who extended Ajla Tomljanovic into a fourth hour in their US Open third-round match, and whose brilliance spanned more than a quarter of a century. She and her sister Venus changed the game, and the approach to life of many - whether they had been dreaming of a pro tennis career or simply a better, fairer future for themselves and their family. Be yourself, was the message. Women, especially those of colour, do not need to hide their emotions or a desperate will to succeed. Many noses were put out of joint in the process, but corrective surgery had been long overdue. Muhammad Ali and perhaps Billie Jean King aside, has any athlete made a greater impact on society than Serena Williams? And she may be only just beginning. • Serena's top 10 moments - vote for your favourite • Williams waves farewell after Ajla Tomljanovic defeat • 'The greatest the world has ever seen' - tributes to Williams • Williams plans karaoke and time with daughter after US Open farewell • How US Open victory of 1999 tells the story of what was to come • Serena Williams - the ultimate game-changer? Her achievements are without parallel. Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles was always a false target, as the phenomenally successful Australian won 13 of those titles when professionals were banned from taking part. The target was, though, incredibly motivating and helped a 30-plus Williams win more than half of the S...

The Story of the Tragic Killing of Serena and Venus Williams' Oldest Sister

"I'm trying to get through this. I'm trying to get away, I'm trying to get her to safety," Wormley Los Angeles Times in 2003. "Once I get to Long Beach Boulevard, I see the back window is shattered. I look to the right and said, 'Baby, are you all right?' I look at [Price], and there was blood everywhere." (Photo by Sylvain Gaboury/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images) The Williams' sister's sudden death sent shockwaves through the close-knit family. Venus got the news in New York City, where she was visiting for Fashion Week. Serena was in Toronto filming for the cable series Street Time and, by one account, became visibly distraught when she learned her sister had been fatally shot. Both flew to L.A., where they were joined by mom Oracene (who had Price in a previous relationship), and their dad, Richard. Price lived in a comfortable home in an upscale neighborhood in Corona. According to locals, she doted on her three kids, two boys and a girl, all of whom were under the age of 12 when she was killed. On the evening before the shooting, Price and her children visited with friends across the street. She watched part of the Oscar De La Hoya boxing match before making sure the kids would be taken care of and heading off with Wormley on her fatal trip.

Serena Williams describes nearly dying from childbirth complications

Tennis star Serena Williams "(W)inning is now a desire and no longer a need," Williams writes in a But simply waking up in the morning is not something the 23-time Grand Slam champion takes for granted. In the essay, Williamsreveals the harrowing experience she hadin the hospital after giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017 -- one that required four surgeries, including a C-section, and put her perilously close to death. SERENA: Her story starts out asa routine pregnancy, though an unexpected one. Although she still competed for a while in 2017 after finding out she was expecting, she says her body made its preference very clear. "Being an athlete is so often about controlling your body, wielding its power, but it’s also about knowing when to surrender," she says. As she got closer to her due date, she came to a stunning realization: "I guess I’m one of those women who likes being pregnant; I enjoyed the positive attention. I’m used to getting negative attention from the press and critics, but this was different." When it was time to give birth, she was as prepared as she would be for any tournament. Except this was different. In 2010, Williams was diagnosed with blood clots in her lungs, and doctors discovered a hematoma in her abdomen. Her condition was treatable, but she was at a highrisk for clots going forward. After giving birth, Williams began to lose feeling in her legs. And her pain increased. Although the hospital staff didn't seem overly concerned, she ins...

Serena Williams reveals how blood clot left her 'on my death bed'

The queen is, if not quite back, then at least looming with convalescent intent. Nourished by south-coast breezes, Williams, who will face Tsvetana Pironkova on the grass courts of Eastbourne, has spent nearly 12 months incapacitated by a cut to her foot sustained last July and by a pulmonary embolism discovered in March. On Monday she revealed that the clot in her lung had been a life-threatening condition. "I was on my death bed at one point – quite literally. I've had a serious illness but at first I didn't appreciate that," she said. Williams had been on the way out to the Oscars party when she experienced difficulty breathing. It was only at her physiotherapist's insistence that she went to hospital instead. "At first people said it would be fine, it would be all right but it turned out to be a lot more serious. If it had been left two days later it could have been career-ending – or even worse. They told me I had several blood clots in both lungs. A lot of people die from that. "It got to the stage where it felt like I could hardly breathe. Some days I didn't get out of bed at all. I just laid on a couch thinking why has this happened to me? The second surgery [on her lung] was tough, more mentally tough than a lot of things I've been through, including my sister dying. This has given me a whole new perspective on life and my career – and not taking anything for granted. I'm just taking one day at a time. I'm not preparing for today or for It was a fittingly dramatic...

Serena Williams: Statistics on deaths in pregnancy or childbirth 'heartbreaking'

Williams, 36, suffered a pulmonary embolism after her first child was delivered by Caesarean section. The American says it may be time for women to "to get feisty and stand up". • Serena Williams 'ready' for Indian Wells • What can Williams expect on her return? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black women in the United States are more than three times as likely as white women to die during pregnancy or childbirth. "Doctors aren't listening to us, just to be quite frank," Williams told the BBC as she competed in the Tiebreak Tens event in New York. "It may be time for women to be comfortable with having uncomfortable conversations. "I was in a really fortunate situation where I know my body well, and I am who I am, and I told the doctor: 'I don't feel right, something's wrong.' She immediately listened. "She was great. I had a wonderful, wonderful doctor. Unfortunately a lot of African Americans and black people don't have the same experience that I've had. "Also there are some things we are genetically pre-disposed to that some people aren't. So knowing that going in, or some doctors not caring as much for us, is heartbreaking. "Because of what I went through, it would be really difficult if I didn't have the healthcare that I have - and to imagine all the other women that do go through that without the same healthcare, without the same response, it's upsetting." Williams played in the doubles in the USA's Fed Cup tie against the Netherlands la...
