Shankaracharya Vs Sai devotees: PIL filed against Swaroopananda Saraswati in HC

The spat between Sai devotees and Swaroopanada Saraswati has turned ugly in the last few days after the latter stoked a huge controversy by issuing objectionable remarks against Sai Baba of Shirdi. The petition alleges that the controversial remarks made by the Swaroopanada Saraswati have hurt the religious sentiments of thousands of followers of Sai Baba, hence legal action should be taken against the Shankaracharya. The court is expected to take up the case on July 04. The Shankaracharya recently triggered a controversy by saying that worshipping Sai Baba was a conspiracy to divide Hindus. He had also said that Sai Baba should not be worshipped as he was a human being and not a God, and his temples should not be built. His statement was severely condemned by the followers of the saint. Meanwhile, the Naga Sadhus have extended their support to Swaroopananda Saraswati and warned of protests on streets if the Dwarkapeeth seer is insulted. They have declared the spat as a `religious war`. The Shankaracharya had also refused to regard Sai Baba as the epitome of Hindu-Muslim unity, saying if it were the case, the spiritual man would have been revered by Muslims with as much devotion as Hindus. Bhopal: Dwarka Peeth Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati, who was known as the ‘Revolutionary Sadhu’ during India’s freedom struggle, passed away at the age of 99 at ‘Shridham Jhoteshwar Ashram’ in Madhya Pradesh’s Narsinghpur district on Sunday afternoon. The funeral will take place at his ashram Shridham Jhoteshwar, around 300km from Bhopal, at 4pm on Monday. He was the Known to speak his mind on socio-political issues, the late Shankaracharya was born to a Brahmin family in Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh. He left his home at the age of nine in the path of God and undertook religious sojourns to different places in the country. He received education in Vedas and other Hindu scriptures from Sri Karpatri Maharaj in Kanhi. And when Mahatma Gandhi gave the call for the Quit India movement in 1942, Swami Swaroopanand – then known as Pothiram Upadhyay – joined the freedom struggle as a 19-year-old. He was jailed for nine months in Kashi and for another six months in Madhya Pradesh by the Raj. He was also appointed president of Ram Rajya Parishad, the political party of his Guru Karpatri Maharaj. In 1950, Shankaracharya of Sharda Peet Swami Brahmanand Saraswati gave him ‘Dand Deeksha’ and he began to be recognised as Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. He became Shankaracharya of Dwarka Peeth in 1982. He was known to be close to several political leaders, the most prominent of them being former CM Digvijaya Singh, who had taken ‘Deeksha’ from him.

Swami Swaroopanand, who was the Shankracharya of Dwarka, Sharda, and Jyotish Peeth, was not keeping well for over a year, he said. He died at his Ashram in the Narsinghpur district around 3:30 PM, Swami Sadanand Maharaj, second-in-command (known as Dandi Swami) of the Dwarka Peeth, told PTI. The Shankaracharya was born as Pothiram Upadhyay in Dighori village in the Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh in 1924. He had left his home in pursuit of God at the age of 9. He was incarcerated during the freedom struggle.
