Shankhpushpi or Shyamaktanta is a perennial herb that is used for its medicinal benefits. It helps to manage digestion and constipation due to its mild laxative property. It improves mental health and might help in managing depression due to its antidepressant activity. Shankhpushpi plant It is grass like plants, found in the rocky areas during rainy season. In some areas, it is found throughout the year. How does it looks? It is a perennial plant, which grow out and then spread all over the ground and grass. The leaves are 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch long, broad at base and taper towards tip. Flowers are white or dark pink, and round like those of fennel. The fruits are brown in color, small, oily and shiny. Complete plant has violet colored hairs all over it. Useful parts: flowers of shankhpushpi Flowers, fruits, seeds, roots. The whole plant is usable. Properties: It is astringent, cold potency, sticky and bitter. It promotes intellect and cures mental problems like epilepsy. It is beneficial for memory and endures physical strength. It is anthelmintic and antitoxic. When it comes to treating mental and emotional imbalances, certain Ayurvedic herbs are becoming a bit more mainstream here in the West (i.e. Shankapushpi is by far at the top of this list and therefore is one of my personal favorite and frequently used herbs when treating almost any disorder in the mind or nervous system. Shankapushpi is a well known “medhya rasayana” herb meaning that it promotes mental clarity, a strong intellect and rejuvenation of the mind and nervous system as a whole. It is considered a sacred and sattvic (balanced) plant that can be used by all body types ( Shankapushpi improves the circulation to the brain resulting in a heighten sense of clarity, improved memory and greater focus. Although this herb is highly effective for awakening the mind and intellect, it is equally as grounding and is widely used in treating anxiety, a restless mind, excessive worry and sleep disorders of all kinds. Being a very balanced plant, Shankapushpi is safe and gentle for treating individuals of all ages, from young children to those of old age. In fact it is often an herb of choice when treating ADD, ADHD and other mental/emotional disorders in children, as well as preventing or treating memory loss in the elderly.
