While there was not much doubt about Rahane’s inclusion in the side, Shardul’s place was questioned by many after he was preferred over the world’s No. 1 Test bowler, R Ashwin, in the playing XI for the WTC 2023 final. But he silenced everyone by scoring a fifty, and taking note of his superb show, former Indian opening batter

Shardul Thakur: 'The Oval surface under prepared for WTC Final'

Shardul Thakur said The Oval pitch was “under prepared” and different from the surface they played on in 2021. India had won that contest by 157 runs in September 2021 with Shardul scoring a fifty in both innings. But on Friday, as Thakur copped two nasty blows to his arm, he didn’t have a positive assessment of the surface. “The pitch is surely different. Last time we played the pitch was doing something and everyone knows if there is cloud cover in England the ball moves around.” “As the game went forward last time and the team started taking rollers it became flat. But this time it was not anything like that. It was under prepared I felt going in to the game. Like we saw yesterday and today it was a bit up and down,” said Shardul who scored 51 runs. Shardul and Ajinkya Rahane shared a valuable 109-run stand to take India to a fighting 296 run total in reply to Australia’s first-innings score of 469 in the World Test Championship final. From one end, the ball took off after hitting length and the Australian pacers exploited that. “If we see yesterday’s play also, pitch changed a little. Ball was hard and bouncing from odd length. With six wickets down on the board, not too many runs, under pressure, yes you would say the toughest hour though I have played handful of game but felt like welcome to Test cricket. “There is an area ...

Even 450 can be chased: Shardul Thakur hopeful of record chase from India in WTC final vs Australia

By India Today Sports Desk: India all-rounder Shardul Thakur has said that even 450 runs can be chased down in the final of the World Test Championship. Australia are currently leading India by 296 runs at the end of Day 3 in the WTC Final at the Kennington Oval. Speaking at the press conference after Day 3, Shardul said even 450 runs can be chased down on the back of one good partnership. Shardul scored a half-century to help India post 296 runs in their first innings in the WTC Final. Australia are piling on a sizeable lead at The Oval to take a hold in the “Last year England chased 400 here and they did not lose too many wickets. So that's a positive sign for us. Whatever they put up on the board, it's too early to make any predictions. We see a lot of times in Test cricket that game changes within an hour. So yes, we like to be optimistic tomorrow going on the field. And yeah, we'll take it on from there,” Shardul added. Speaking about his partnership with Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul said they had to absorb the pressure and kept talking to each other throughout their 109-run stand for the seventh wicket on Day 3. “We didn't decide anything. There was no situation to decide anything. We just had to absorb the pressure. We were talking to each other a lot,” said Shardul. Meanwhile, Australia pacer Mitchell Starc said they will continue batting on Day 4, adding that hopefully the pitch can play a few tricks in the fourth innings. Australia posted 469 runs in the first innings...

Shardul Thakur does the unthinkable, equals Don Bradman, Allan Border's record

Shardul Thakur is not called 'Lord' for nothing. He somehow has the ability to make things happen when it is least expected. Want proof? Remember his partnership with Washington Sundar at The Gabba when India were down and out? Or his blistering 51 in the first innings followed by 60 in the second at The Oval against England last year? How about the historic seven-wicket haul in Johannesburg against South Africa? On all those occasions, India were in dire straits and Shardul did something or the other either with the bat or with the ball to not only bring India back in the match but also win it. India's Shardul Thakur in action during Day three of the test match between India and Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, at The Oval in London(BCCI Twitter) Come the World Test Championship final against Australia, he has put his hand up again. To say that he has done enough to put India in a winning position would be exaggerating stuff to a great deal but what his rearguard 51-run knock on Day 3 has done is that it has made sure India stay in the game after being run over in the first two days. Shardul Thakur equals Bradman and Border's feat at The Oval And that's not all, in the process of registering his fourth Test half-century, Shardul Thakur also equalled a feat held jointly held previously by Don Bradman and Allan Border. Let that sink in. This was the third consecutive time that Shardul crossed the fifty-run mark at The Oval - which is the joint-most ...
