Shehzada: Why does ultimate outsider Kartik Aaryan’s new film end up endorsing Bollywood nepotism?

Shehzada: Why does ultimate outsider Kartik Aaryan’s new film end up endorsing Bollywood nepotism? Post Credits Scene: Kartik Aaryan's Shehzada is confused on several fronts, but after two hours of condemning nepotism, it undermines its own stance right at the end. Also read | An early scene in Shehzada serves as a blunt metaphor for the outsider experience in the film industry. Aaryan plays Bantu, the now-grown up boy that Rawal’s character kidnapped in the opening scene. Bantu doesn’t know it yet, but he’s the ‘eklauta waaris’ of the wealthy Jindals. Having been separated from them at birth, however, he has gone on to study law at Amritsar and has now found himself knocking at the door of a prestigious firm where Back to Bantu. He shows up at law firm one day, only to be told by Samara that he stands no chance against the Harvard and Cambridge graduates that they usually accept. “ Merit dekhe bina reject kar diya. Not fair,” a dejected Bantu says. Samara takes a moment, and then calls him into the room to essentially ‘audition’ for the job, using two of her actual clients as props. The scene is effective enough at communicating what director Rohit Dhawan, himself a product of nepotism, has to say about the controversial subject. He seems to understand that the bigger challenge for most outsiders isn’t getting a job, but getting their foot in the door. The term ‘outs...

Shehzada movie review: Logic takes a back seat in this loud Kartik Aaryan film

Shehzada, the Hindi remake of Allu Arjun's Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020), is a complete star vehicle for (Also read: Shehzada trailer: Kartik Aaryan takes on action and comedy scenes, talks about 'real nepotism'. Watch ) Kartik Aaryan plays Bantu in Rohit Dhawan's Shehzada. Bantu (Kartik) grows up wondering why his father Valmiki ( Both families unknowingly deal with consequences and move on in their staid lives. Until the day, Bantu discovers his true parentage and decides to help his fractured family. Here the film, directed by Rohit Dhawan, becomes a strange mix of Bawarchi (1972) and Mary Poppins (1964), borrowing elements where an outsider comes to fix a family's problems and eventually reunite them all. The film has its moments especially with dialogues of Hussain Dalal, that both point out the ridiculousness of the plot and lack of logic. One highlight of Shehzada is a special appearance of Rajpal Yadav as a police officer who comes to investigate an attack on Randeep. His exchange with Kartik's Bantu on what's happening with the Jindal family is spot on. The audience might very well be having the same reactions as Rajpal in the film. But the film ignores logic for the sake of the slo-mo action scenes where the hero saves the day once again. Kartik, who is also a producer here, gets the most footage in Shehzada. He is also surrounded a supporting cast as his real-but-not-real family including grandfather Aditya Jindal (Sachin Khedekar), mother Yasu (Manisha Koirala...

Shehzada Review: Take Kartik Aaryan Out, There Might Not Be Much Left

A crucial scene in the lead-up to the intermission of Shehzada comes pretty close to summing up what Rohit Dhawan's new film is like. A woman who has been comatose for a quarter century suddenly springs to life, blurts out a long-suppressed truth, and, having set the cat among pigeons, promptly breathes her last. The film, too, is somewhat of a fits-and-starts affair. After a quick prelude that plays out 25 years ago, it slips into a moribund state, acquires some degree of vitality on either side of its halfway point and then goes right back to being what it predominantly was in the first hour and a bit - limp, lackluster and lacking in genuine humour. But no matter how Shehzada pans out over its two-and-a-half-hour runtime, lead actor Kartik Aaryan, also credited as a producer, is in fine fettle. He uses the film as an extended demo reel to showcase his range as an actor. Blending slow-motion swag, some cultivated effervescence and flashes of emotion, he frequently hits the sweet spot. Be it melodrama, comedy, action or romance, Aaryan gives the film all he's got. If parts of this swapped-baby dramedy are fairly watchable, it is solely because of what Aaryan brings to the table - a likeable persona whose masculinity is tempered with a clear sense of the line that separates the acceptable from what is not. A boy switched at birth by a factotum of a wealthy tycoon, the hero, Bantu (Aaryan), ends up in the home of the naukar when he rightfully should have been raised in the ...

Sharing the weekend collections of the film, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on Twitter on Monday, “Shehzada doesn’t live up to the expectations… The weekend biz is below the mark… The *big* jump / turnaround on Saturday and Sunday - to improve its prospects - is clearly missing… Friday ₹6 cr, Saturday ₹6.65 cr, Sunday ₹7.55 cr. Total: ₹20.20 crore [+/-]. India biz (business).” After an average opening, Shehzada hardly showed any improvement on the off days with collections of just ₹6.65 crore on Saturday and ₹7.55 crore on Sunday. Commenting on the opening figures, film trade analyst Komal Nahta had told Hindustan Times, “It’s a flop right from the word ‘go’.” An excerpt from the Hindustan Times review of the film read, “Shehzada, the Hindi remake of Allu Arjun's Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020), is a complete star vehicle for Kartik Aaryan. The film completely revolves around the actor, even neglecting other characters and storylines in favour of its lead. The actor is convincing enough in this old-fashioned tale of babies switched at birth and a motivation for revenge which exceeds everything.” Talking about her ro...

Shehzada Day 1 Box Office: Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon's film takes a low start; Collects Rs 5.75 crore

Rs. 5.75 crores nett on day 1 in India and this number is on lines with what most trade pundits expected after a lukewarm response to the advance bookings of the film. It will be critical for the film to see a strong growth over the weekend and if the film manages it, the momentum will carry forward to the weekdays, before it sees a new rival in the form of Selfiee next weekend. Shehzada Does Not Benefits From The Buy One Get One Offer For The Opening Day The Buy One Get One offer was floated by the team of Shehzada, on the evening prior to the release of the film and after that, the speed of the advances grew at a significant pace. The advance figure closed in the 30,000 tickets range in national chains, when it once looked like it would struggle to get to 20,000 tickets. The momentum that the film got on the last day of the advance, did not carry forward on the opening day and so it could not do as well as it ideally should have. Maha Shivratri Can Help Numbers Come At A Steady Pace On Day 2 Maha Shivratri falls on the second day for the film and the holiday should boost the collections of the film. The Buy One Get One offer has been extended to the second day. The film could not avert a low opening day but can hopefully see a good trend considering that it has a holiday benefit to cash in on. Mass centres, where collections drop on Saturday, should remain steady, courtesy the national holiday. Shehzada faced stiff competition from the Hollywood biggie You can watch Sheh...
