Photograph: @mieknathshinde/Twitter On Friday, Shrikant Shinde had said some leaders were trying to create hurdles in the alliance in Dombivali area (under Kalyan Lok Sabha seat) for their own selfish politics and that he was ready to leave the seat since the aim was to ensure the Narendra Modi government returns with a thumping majority in the 2024 LS polls. Latching on to the strain there, Shiv Sena-UBT Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said the Kalyan-Dombivali area was a stronghold of the (undivided) Shiv Sena and the party had been winning from there for years now. "The same seat was given to Shrikant Shinde who had no connection with the party. Uddhav Thackeray had pampered Shinde's son. Let him fight his battle. The BJP will make them (Shinde-led Shiv Sena) cry for every single seat," Raut said. The NCP said the BJP had plans to ditch Shinde in Kalyan and eventually force all Shiv Sena leaders to contest on its lotus symbol. "Looks like @BJP4Maharashtra has all plans to ditch MP Dr Shrikant Shinde in Kalyan Loksabha Constituency. Eventually BJP will force all others from Shinde camp to contest on BJP ticket or face permanent political isolation. @NCPspeaks," the party's spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said. On Friday, in a bid to defuse the situation, Shrikant Shinde had said he would "back whichever candidate the senior leadership of BJP-Sena decides" for K...

Shinde's win and Uddhav's loss: The nail

By India Today Web Desk: Maharashtra Chief minister Eknath Shinde won the floor test. The government got the majority mark with 164 votes. The four-day-old chief minister proved his majority in 23 minutes. As many as 99 MLAs voted against the Shinde-BJP government. Samajwadi Part's Abu Azmi and Raees Shaikh, and AIMIM MLA Shah Tarikh Anwar abstained from voting. Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis thanked the MLAs for the massive support. “I am thankful to the MLAs for their massive support to the Shinde government. Shinde is a loyal Siv Sainik. He is loyal to Balasaheb's ideology,” Devendra Fadnavis said. How it all started 1. It all started when the then CM of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray, suspected cross-voting in Legislative Council elections and called an urgent meeting of all Shiv Sena MLAs. All MLAs were strictly asked to remain present at the meeting. However, Shiv Sena leader and minister Eknath Shinde was untraceable, along with 11 MLAs. On the same day, sources in Surat confirmed that over a dozen legislators from Maharashtra were lodged at the Le Meridien hotel. 2. Shiv Sena removed Shinde from the post of legislature party leader as the news of the rebellion spread. While Shiv Sena was holding meetings with Congress and NCP, the rebel Sena MLAs shifted their base from Surat to Guwahati in BJP-ruled Assam. On arrival, Eknath Shinde claimed he had the support of 40 MLAs, more than the number required to back the anti-defection law. 3. On the third day, Deep...

“According to the election surveys, 30.2 per cent of citizens of Maharashtra prefer Bharatiya Janata Party, while 16.2 per cent of citizens prefer the Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde). These numbers show that a total of 46.4 per cent people of Maharashtra trust the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena alliance for the development of the state,” the advertisement said. Responding to the advertisement, Sanjay Raut of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) said, “It was Balasaheb’s Shiv Sena earlier, but the advertisement has cleared the air. It has now become Modi-Shah’s Shiv Sena. Where is the image or photo of late Balasaheb Thackeray in the advertisement?” State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, however, tried to downplay the advertisement. “It is always the election result that decides which party or leader is more acceptable to the voters. Shinde as a cabinet minister was popular earlier and now his acceptance has increased as the chief minister. People of the state have lots of expectations from Fadnavis, Shinde and Modi.” As a state-level leader, the people of Maharashtra have given preference to Fadnavis twice, he said. “There is no comparison between the Shiv Sena and BJP about who is a bigger or smaller party,” added Bawankule.
