NCP, Congress doing 'injustice' to Shiv Sena: Former minister Tanaji Sawant

By PTI PUNE: Shiv Sena MLA and former Maharashtra minister Tanaji Sawant on Monday claimed there was a perception among his senior leaders that the party was getting "secondary" treatment in the ruling coalition headed by it and this was reflected in the recent state budget presented by finance minister Ajit Pawar. He said it was because of the Shiv Sena that the NCP and the Congress came to power and but now they are doing "injustice" to the saffron outfit led by Uddhav Thackeray, who is heading the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government since November 2019. Addressing party workers in Solapur, around 250km from here, Sawant claimed the departments headed by the NCP got 57 per cent to 60 per cent of the total allocations made in the budget for 2022-23. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, who also holds the finance portfolio, presented the budget in the Assembly on March 11. He is a senior leader of the NCP, the second largest constituent in the Sena-led MVA government. "There is a common mentality (thinking) among all senior leaders of the Shiv Sena, be it from Konkan, Western Maharashtra, Marathwada or Vidharba, that the party (Shiv Sena) is getting secondary treatment and the same was reflected in the state budget," said Sawant. He claimed of the total budget, the NCP-led departments got 57 per cent to 60 per cent allocation, those headed by Congress ministers 30 per cent to 35, while the Shiv Sena's share in fund allotments was just 16 per cent. "The higher and technical edu...

(Photo by Anshuman Poyrekar/ Hindustan Times) (Anshuman Poyrekar/HT PHOTO) On Wednesday, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena issued advertisements that played up his partnership with Fadnavis, but the wound inflicted by the first set of advertisements cut deep. In response to Shinde’s campaign projecting himself as part of the double engine government with PM Modi and giving a short shrift to his deputy, Fadnavis loyalist and BJP MP Anil Bonde likened Shinde to a frog on the well. A frog, he said, cannot become an elephant no matter how much air you pump into it. Not willing to have their leader insulted thus, Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad responded saying the BJP grew in Maharashtra only by piggybacking on Bal Thackeray. “They should introspect where they stood in 1987 and who helped them grow in the state. BJP grew in Maharashtra only by holding the hand of Balasaheb Thackeray. What was your aukat (status) in Maharashtra?” Gaikwad said. On Wednesday, a day after the original ad appeared that implied Shinde was more popular than Fadnavis in Maharashtra...

Shiv Sena tussle: SC verdict today, Maharashtra parties keep fingers crossed

The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday will deliver verdict on the dispute between the warring factions of Shiv Sena — one led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the other by Uddhav Thackeray, even as Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar will be away from the state, on a London tour till May 15. The apex court will pronounce its judgment on the disqualification plea of 16 MLAs of Shinde faction. The MLAs, including Shinde, were sent disqualification notices for not attending a party meeting convened by the then CM Uddhav Thackeray despite a whip. In July, when Shinde sought a trust vote on the floor of the Assembly, the ruling A five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud and Justices MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha concluded the hearing on March 16 and reserved its verdict on pleas filed by both the groups. While reserving its verdict, the bench had asked how could Uddhav Thackeray be reinstated as CM, even if it finds the Governor’s action in calling for a trust vote illegal, given that he had resigned without facing the floor test, “accepting” that he was in a minority. The remark came as the Thackeray group urged the bench to restore the status quo ante. The Thackeray faction pleaded before the apex court for setting aside then Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari’s June 2022 order to then CM Uddhav Thackeray to take a floor test, asserting democracy wi...
