This January, Shreya Lenka was just one of millions of amateur dancers around the world who liked to put up ‘dance covers’ of their favourite songs on YouTube. The 18-year-old would spend hours practising on the roof of her family home in Jharsuguda, Odisha. The roof’s white-washed walls even served as the backdrop for videos like her dance cover of ‘Close To Me’, a hit song by multicultural K-pop band Blackswan.

Rourkela: In a groundbreaking achievement, Odisha’s 20-year-old Shreya Lenka aka Sriya from Rourkela has marked her K-Pop debut as one of the few Indian artists to break into the exclusive and highly valued Korean entertainment industry. She has featured in the much-awaited comeback album of the popular girl group BLACKSWAN. The recently released single, titled ‘Karma’, showcases BLACKSWAN’s new members and a fresh creative direction. The accompanying music video, shot in Sriya’s home state of Odisha, presents vibrant street scenes and picturesque ruins enveloped in lush greenery. While maintaining the signature high-energy choreography, the video also pays homage to the nostalgic red brick walls of schools and showcases a young Odissi dancer in full attire. The BLACKSWAN members don an array of outfits heavily inspired by Indian culture and fashion, perfectly synchronised with captivating choreography and music that define K-Pop groups. Sriya, chosen at the age of 18, along with Brazil’s Gabriela Dalcin, is well-versed in classical Odissi dance as well as contemporary forms. She attributes her ‘deep voice’ to her vocal trainer, whom she found with the help of her grandmother. PTI New Delhi, May 28 Shreya Lenka, an 18-year-old girl from Odisha's Rourkela, has been selected as the fifth member of popular South Korean pop band Blackswan. Lenka, who goes by stage name Sriya, will be joining the original members of the girl group -- Youngheun, Fatou, Judy and Leia -- along with Gabriela Dalcin (Gabi) from Brazil as the sixth member. Record label DR Music welcomed Lenka and Dalcin on board in an Instagram post. "With their debut, we will be back with the new Blackswan," the post, accompanied with photographs of the new members, read. Lenka and Dalcin were selected for the band after participating in the six-month-long global auditions, that were announced by DR Music last year after Hyeme left the girl group. Lenka, who hails from the steel city of Rourkela in Sundargarh district of western Odisha, was selected for the band last week alongside Gabriela Dalcin from Brazil. They both will join original band members Youngheun, Fatou, Judy and Leia soon. "I never imagined that my dream would come true so soon. It was so precious to be selected because that moment changed the course of my life.
