Siachen Glacier

The Siachen Glacier region experiences an extremely cold climatic condition, with temperatures dropping to -50°C. The winter snowfall is over 1,000 cm, with the area experiencing high-speed winds and avalanches. The Siachen Glacier is the major source of the 80km long Nubra River, a major tributary of the Shyok River. The Shyok River feeds into the 3,180km long Dispute and Conflict The Siachen region is a subject of territorial dispute between India and Pakistan. Environmental Concerns The heavy military presence is a major threat because of the glacier melting and pollution. Both troops depend on glacial ice as the main source of water for their livelihood. However, they use chemicals to cut and melt the glacial ice. Besides, the troops also dump large amounts of wastes, including non-biodegradable material. Thus, the presence of army personal on the glacier is the main cause of glacial retreat. According to a study conducted by the Pakistani Meteorological Department, the glacier size has reduced by about 35% and currently decreasing by 110 meters annually. The military activities have also affected the flora and fauna of the region, with almost all species at risk, including the

To achieve this global temperature goal, countries aim to reduce growth of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and rapid reductions thereafter, based on the best available science, economic and social feasibility. The effects of climate change are already well visible by increasing air temperatures, melting glaciers and decreasing polar ice caps, rising sea levels, increasing desertification, as well as by more frequent extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, floods and storms. Minus 57 Degree Celsius In Siachen, Indian Army Troops Face Avalanches

New Delhi: Well-rehearsed drills to escape from natural disasters have saved the lives of over 200 Indian Army troops in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, where temperatures fall to as low as minus 57 degree Celsius. There has been unprecedented snowfall in the last 48 hours at Gurez, Bandipur, Kupwara, Naugaon and Baramula in north Kashmir. The lowest temperature - minus 57 degree Celsius - was reported from North Glacier, or Siachen, the highest battlefield in the world. At least 32 avalanches of different intensity have been reported near army posts, officials said. Over 200 troops at Gurez moved to a safer location before their post was hit by a big avalanche, officials said. In Tangdhar sector, all seven soldiers who were at the post came under an avalanche. They were saved by soldiers of an alert rescue team. Similarly, at Gulmarg sector, seven soldiers whose shelter came under an avalanche were rescued. In Naogaon sector, all four Border Security Force personnel hit by an avalanche were rescued; however, a constable suffered a cardiac arrest and died. In another avalanche at Machhil sector, rescue teams pulled out five soldiers. One died during treatment; the body of the other was found after a search, while two were found dead earlier during the day, officials said. Avalanches are one of the biggest threats at Siachen, located at a height of around 20,000 feet in the Karakoram range. Avalanches and landslides are common at the glacier during winter.

Weather in Siachen: Inclement weather in Jammu and Kashmir: to create difficulties for visit of Defence Minister to Siachen

The newly elected Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh is all set to make his first outstation visit and that too to the world’s most weather prone and dangerous battlefield, Siachen. His plan includes visiting the Siachen glacier today and interacting with the soldiers deployed. Siachen is 33,000 ft above the ground level and in Winters here, temperatures plummet as low as -70 °C . The weather, on the other hand, doesn’t seem very conducive in the hills. Already, Due to the combined effect of this system, some light rainfall activity was seen over the hills and foothills of Mountainous terrain adds one more dimension to the weather activity i.e. snow. And rightly so, while it might snow in the higher reaches, rain and thundershower are possible in the mid and lower reaches. Such weather can definitely affect the visit. Moreover, in higher reaches like that of Siachen, all travel operations are suspended after 4 pm. One short window of better weather will be experienced around noon. ENVIRONMENT: MELTDOWN AT SIACHEN

Located in the eastern Karakoram range, the Siachen glacier is a source of freshwater supply for both India and Pakistan. Seventy-six kilometres long and covering an area of more than 700 kilometres, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and the second-longest in non-polar regions. Unfortunately, the Siachen glacier at an elevation of 5,400 metres, is at risk of disappearing from the world map, not for one but two reasons: the impact of global warming and militarisation of the glacier. In 1984, when India occupied a large part of the glacier it was transformed into the world’s highest conflict zone. The melting and retreat of the Siachen glacier at an alarming and unprecedented rate is feared to have jeopardised the lives of thousands of soldiers deployed by both India and Pakistan since then. However, this has failed to alert India and Pakistan of the impending disaster. Turned into a battlefield and also because of global warming, the glacier is receding. A new enemy has surfaced at the highest battlefield in the world and it threatens both India and Pakistan According to a special report by Australian Disaster Management Consultant Jennifer McKay, published in the February 2016 edition of Inter Services Public Relations’ magazine Hilal, “The Gyari Avalanche in 2012 which took the lives of 129 Pakistani soldiers and 11 civilians, is a reminder of the risks to those who serve there.” In the last 31 years, the miltarisation has “inflicted a great deal of damage on thi...
