WPL 2023: EXPLAINED! How Smriti Mandhana's RCB can still qualify for playoffs after five successive defeats

The inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 edition has become a big hit. It has gained mileage as it proceeds towards the business end of the tournament. So far, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians (MI) have been on a roll, very much like their men's counterpart in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and remain at the top of the points table with as many as five wins on the trot. On Tuesday (March 14), MI defeated Gujarat Giants (GG) by 55 runs to confirma spot in the playoffs. Thus, they became the first side to do so in WPL history. Apart from them, Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals (DC) have also performed well with four wins from five games. UP Warriorz Women (UPW) have two victories and an equal number of losses whereas GG have managed only a solitary triumph from five encounters. Nonetheless, the Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) remain at the bottom and are the only winless side. After five games, Mandhana & Co. have failed to get off the mark in the points table. To add to their woes, they have sufferedbig defeats in as many as four fixtures. Thus, their Net Run Rate (NRR) is also a dismal-2.109. Given their current form, they are very much likely to miss the playoffs race but are not out of contention just yet. RCB remain alive mathematically but need a quick turnaround to progress ahead. Mandhana & Co. need to topple their oppositionin their remainingthree games. Not only this, but RCB also need some favour from other teams. The Bengaluru f...

WPL 2023: Smriti Mandhana Faces Online Abuse After RCB Royal Challengers Bangalore Lose 4 Matches In A Row

It has been a forgettable start to the Womens's Premier League (WPL) for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. While the franchise had picked up a star-studded squad at the auction ahead of the inaugurual season, the team has just not been able to produce the results on the ground. The team appointed Smriti Mandhana as their captain after she became the most expensive played to be purchased at the bidding war for Rs 3.4 crore. And now when the team has not yet bagged a point in the season, she has even faced online abuse for the performance. Other than the fact that RCB have not yet won a game under her captaincy, she has received flak for her returns with the bat. In the 4 innings, the Bangalore skipper has only fetched 80 runs with a best of 35. Her strike rate has been an impressive 133.33 but she just hasn't been able to a get big score under her belt. In their third fixture of the season, Bangalore succumbed to a defeat against Gujarat Giants before the fourth defeat on the trot in the match against UP Warriorz. Amid criticism for her leadership and her personal form, Mandhana has received support from the team's marque all-rounder Ellysse Perry. "Knowing Smriti and how proud and responsible she is for her own game, there's probably no more pressure on her than what she is putting on herself," Perry said after Bangalore's 10-wicket loss to...

Knight opens up on Smriti Mandhana’s RCB captaincy

Knight, speaking on the latest 100% Cricket Podcast , suggested the hype surrounding the inaugural edition of the WPL and the pressure that comes with captaining a high-profile team affected Mandhana, whose side won just twice in eight matches. Mandhana was charged with leading a side comprising international heavyweights in Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine, Dane van Niekerk, Megan Schutt and Knight herself, but RCB still finished fourth out of five teams. “I know Smriti really well. I've played with her at Western Storm before and Hobart Hurricanes a few years ago, so I know [her] really well,” Knight told Nasser Hussain and Frankie Mackay in the ICC 100% Cricket Podcast . “I'm good friends with her. And I felt her at times actually, like the amount of pressure she was under was unlike probably no one has experienced before.” Mandhana was signed up by RCB for INR 3.4cr – the highest winning bid at the WPL auction earlier this year – and was named captain of the side despite a relative lack of experience in the role. She also struggled with the bat, scoring 149 runs in eight games, at an average of 18.62 and a strike-rate of 111.19. “The most expensive player in the team, captaining … she doesn't have a huge amount of captaincy experience, and she's having to captain the likes of me, Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine – we had a very experienced overseas team,” Knight elaborated. “So I think she found that quite tricky. Just the hype as well. And there were polls on the telly after tw...
