A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Rani Lakshmi Bai’. Rani Lakshmi Bai is famously known as the great “Jhansi Ki Rani”. Born in Varanasi or Kashi as it was then known, she was a fierce patriot and was a key figure in the Indian Independence Movement against the tyranny of the British in 1857. Details on her childhood and other personal information are scarce. However, it is believed that she was born with the name Manikarnika– Manikarnika Tambe. Her parents were Married as a child to Raja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi in 1838, she became to reign as the queen post his demise. Wikipedia, in fact, details this information on the monarch. It states as follows: “Rani Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi, was an Indian queen, the Maharani consort of the Maratha princely state of Jhansi from 1843 to 1853 as the wife of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao.” Rani Lakshmi Bai was a fearsome warrior through and through. She was every inch the queen she is known to be today, not bowing to anyone. Refusing to submit to the demands of the British, she fought against them with her army valiantly, becoming one of the first in India to raise her voice against the White Coloniser. She was a great freedom fighter and the heroine of the first war of Indian Freedom. She is known for her stern resistance to British rule. Lakshmibai was born on 19 th November 1828 in Varanasi into a Brahmin family and was named Manirkarna or Manu (nickname) .Her parents, Moropant Tambe(father) and Bhagirathibai Tambe(mother) came from Maharashtra. Her mother died when she was four and her father worked for a court in Peshawar of Bithoor district. ADVERTISEMENTS: Later on he moved to the court of Raja Gangadhar Rao, the Maharaja of Jhansi, when Manu was 13. A year later, she was married to Gangadhar Rao at the age of 14 and was named Lakshmibai. Lakshmibai’s child died at 4 months and Damodar Rao was the adopted child, but the British rulers failed to accept them as legal heir. On consultation of a British lawyer, Lakhsmibai filed an appeal for hearing of the case but the plea was rejected and the state jewels confiscated. An order was passed asking Rani to leave Jhansi fort and move to the Rani Mahal in Jhansi, but Lakshmibai was firm about protecting the state. Lakhsmibai studied self defense, horsemanship, archery, and even formed her own army out of her female friends at court.
