After nearly two and a half hours of web slinging, villain battling, and multiverse jumping, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse delivers a climactic final scene that seems designed to leave audiences reeling. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ends on a massive cliffhanger. “Our contract with the audience is to bring them something they’ve never seen before,” Miller told Empire ahead of Across the Spider-Verse‘s June 2 release. “The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension. This is about Miles heading off into others.” The movie’s conclusion sets up a forthcoming third installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse , in the hit animated film series. But before we get into what’s next, let’s break down what leads to those tense closing moments. Sony Pictures Animation Across the Spider-Verse picks up around a year after the events of Into the Spider-Verse, with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) staying busy on her home world of Earth-65 trying to keep her dad, Captain George Stacy (Shea Wigham), and the rest of the New York police force from figuring out that she’s Spider-Woman. SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” now playing in theaters. Just like the infinite Spider-Verse itself, there are so many different versions of Spider-Man and other spider-themed heroes that pop up in “Across the Spider-Verse” that it’s almost impossible to keep track of everything. In the new movie, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) reunites with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and learns about the Spider Society, a group of Spider-People who protect the multiverse. The team is led by Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), a Spider-Man who lives in the futuristic Nueva York in the year 2099, and Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), a pregnant Spider-Woman who rides a motorcycle. The other major cast members include Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) from “Into the Spider-Verse,” who’s joined by his infant daughter Mayday; Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), aka Spider-Man India; Hobie Brown (Daniel Kaluuya), aka the rocker Spider-Punk; and Margo Kess (Amandla Stenberg), who controls a virtual hero named Spider-Byte. “Across the Spider-Verse” connects to other “Spider-Man” movies and shows, but there are tons of blink-and-you-miss-it cameos from comic book heroes that eagle-eyed fans will notice. Those include a cowboy Web-Slinger and his masked horse Widow (voiced by Taran Killam); Andy Samberg as the ultra-dramatic clone Ben Reilly; Yuri Lowenthal’s Spider-Man from the PlayStation video game series; the sentient Spider-Mobile, aka Peter Parkedcar; ...

Their coexistence is explained by a multiverse with many dimensions. In the latest Miles-led film, Across The Spider-Verse, audiences get a greater understanding of the vastness of the multiverse. The number of Spider-People can get a little unwieldy, so here’s a primer on who each of the key webslingers are and who they were in the comic books before making their movie debuts. Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) Miles Morales, our main protagonist, is a Black and Puerto Rican high school student from Brooklyn. Much like the other Spider-Men, he was bitten by a radioactive spider and was given superpowers in his dimension of Earth-1610. His father was recently promoted to captain of the polic...
