Now a decade later, a teenager from Odhisa has scripted history by becoming the first-ever K-pop star from India. Lenka and Dalcin were selected for the band after participating in the six-month-long global auditions, that were announced by DR Music last year after Hyeme left the girl group. Lenka, a trained dancer, was introduced to K-pop by a friend a few years ago. She found the choreography in the music videos very attractive and got hooked onto its "unique style" of singing and dancing. A 20-year-old from Rourkerla, Odisha, has made her K-pop debut in the much awaited comeback album of Korea's 'BLACKSWAN' girl group. Shreya Lenka, better known as Sriya, is the one of the only With new members, and a new creative direction, BLACKSWAN released their latest single called 'Karma'. The music video, shot in Sriya's home state Odisha, features lively streetscapes and rustic ruins tempered by verdure. With no sacrifice to the high beat routine, the video also gently nods to the nostalgic red brick walls of schools, and a young Odissi dancer in full dress. Sriya, chosen at 18 years old along with Brazil's Gabriela Dalcin, is trained in classical Odissi dance, as well as more contemporary forms. She credits her grandmother for helping her find a vocal trainer for her "deep voice". She trained for the global K-pop auditions during the COVID-19 lockdowns, using her open-air terrace as a studio. As the Korean wave continues to surge, the multi-billion dollar industry is adapting to create content that caters to international fans, without compromising on the formula that skyrocketed it to global fame.

"When DR Music had announced auditions, all studios were shut down due to Covid. I had to practice dance on my rooftop. I was selected for the first round and then I focused on improving my vocals. I started learning Hindustani classical in Rourkela with the help of my grandmother. For the third round, we had to go to Korea but no flights were available due to the shutdown. But my company helped me a lot," Lenka added. Blackswan debuted in 2020 with a full album called 'Goodbye Rania'. Following the departure of one of their members, Hyeme, back in November 2020, the K-Pop group organised virtual global auditions to find a new member. Sriya and Gabi were chosen among more than 4,000 applicants. After qualifying, they were sent to Seoul, where they underwent a rigorous training programme and participated in multiple challenges which were aired on YouTube. Whether they made it into the group or not would depend on their performances and after spending several months competing, DR Music made the announcement on 26 May that both Sriya and Gabi will be the latest members of Blackswan. Lenka, who goes by stage name Sriya, will be joining the original members of the girl group -- Youngheun, Fatou, Judy and Leia -- along with Gabriela Dalcin (Gabi) from Brazil as the sixth member.
