We all have a natural ability to express ourselves in different ways. Effective interpersonal communication is essential in the workplace and at home. It plays a key role in bringing people together, especially when discussion is focused in areas of controversy or conflict. If we have strong verbal communication skills, we are more likely to experience success. • Ask questions– pose questions that are relevant, well-timed and open-ended. Open-ended questions increase the scope of discussion because they require additional information. • Probe– continue a specific discussion using follow-up questions (tell me more about…, please explain… ) or non-verbal signals (nodding, remaining silent, maintaining eye contact) • Paraphrase– restate in your own words what someone else has said to confirm active listening. • Redirect questions and comments– ask other group members to respond to questions or comments directed to you. Have you ever read a text message and completely misunderstood what the sender meant or intended to say? or maybe thought someone was being rude or abrupt to you? Sometimes we may dismiss the idea as a cultural quirk but even then, if this message was delivered by a video or the telephone, would it be perceived in the same way. For many people, hybrid working is now the new normal. One day you might be in the office and can directly speak to co-worker but the next you are at home communicating by emails. When communication is not effective it can have a surprisingly detrimental effect on many aspects of relationships, both in the workplace and in our personal life. Let’s take the workplace for example: Bad communication can impact key project objectives, employee morale and then productivity. Here are some tips on how to achieve effective communication: • Listen first – really listen. It’s harder but more rewarding than you think! • If communicating via text message, try to word it to ensure messages are understood correctly • Respond to messages while the information is fresh in your mind to avoid missing important details and check for understanding if needed. Never assume intent. • Follow up your emails. If you haven’t had a response, there seems little point in repeating the exercise.
