New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (January 21, 2022) announced that a grand statue of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose will be installed at India Gate as a symbol of India's indebtedness to him. The hologram statue is a placeholder until a granite statue is installed at the site. The unveiling ceremony was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah. "This is a historic location and a historic occasion. Netaji refused to bow before the British. His statue will inspire democratic values and future generations. We have to move ahead by taking inspiration from Netaji's 'can do, will do' spirit," PM Modi said. "This is not just a statue but a befitting tribute to the legendary Netaji, who gave everything for India’s freedom," said Union home minister Amit Shah. The government announced earlier this week that Republic Day celebrations in the country would begin on January 23 every year to incorporate the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday unveiled a 28-ft-tall statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate. The statue is part of the Centre's Rs 13,450-crore Central Vista project, which will have a new Parliament building, new office and residences for the prime minister and vice-president and new ministry buildings. The North and South Blocks, the secretariat buildings flanking Rashtrapati Bhavan, will be converted into museums. The black granite statue has been carved from a monolithic block of granite weighing 280 metric tonne. The block of granite picked for the statue was transported to Delhi from Telangana and the statue was carved out of it in over two months.

"The role of our heroes, whose memories were being erased post-Independence... are now being revived," he said at the inauguration. In what appeared a swipe at the successive Congress governments since Independence, PM Modi said: "It is unfortunate that after Independence, along with the culture and rites of the country, work was done to erase the contribution of many great personalities." He then formed the Azad Hind Fauj and pursued the path of armed revolution. The controversy over Netaji's death is a hugely emotive issue, especially in Bengal and many still believe that he did not die in a plane crash in 1945.
