An extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life

Tan Sri B.C. Sekhar, her husband, had put Malaysia on the map by distinguishing himself as the father of the modern rubber industry, and her children – Datuk Dr Vinod Sekhar, who is Petra Group chairman and group chief executive; Jayan, Sujatha and Gopinath – simply adored their mother. As Sujatha said, “her heart was open to the world” and, as a “constant optimist”, their mother attracted friendships and camaraderie wherever she went. Yesterday, Sukumari, for one final time, brought people together for her send-off at the Loke Yew Crematorium here. Watching the reel Mithali Raj with the real Mithali Raj

By Priya Nagi: “You are here because you are either family or like family,” said Ajit Andhare, the producer of Shabaash Mithu — The Unheard Story of Women in Blue. It was a brief opening remark for the people, including former and current players and media persons, invited to the private screening of the film inspired from the life of former India cricketer Mithali Raj. “The story is not per say my story; it is a story from my vision, my perspective about women's cricket,” Mithali clarified to India Today on whether the film is her biopic. While Andhare continued with his welcome message, Mithali and actress Taapsee Pannu, in titular role, smiled ear to ear. Throughout her cricketing career, Mithali ensured her emotions remained under control on the field, but on the film screening day, for the selected audience, her happiness knew no boundary. Mithali's child-like excitement throughout the screening as well as concern towards elderly people were clearly visible. She didn’t leave any opportunity to sneak out a couple of times to catch up with her former teammates and officials, and obliged to n number of photographs. Mithali attended to her guests and made sure no one felt left out. Everybody wanted a piece of Mithali and the Indian cricket legend was happy to spend time with her well-wishers. She was the reason for everyone's smile and as the film ended people were left spellbound. It was a rare occasion to see a cricketer, especially a woman cricketer, being surrounded b...
