UP Nikay Chunaav 2023: The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced Sunita Dayal as their candidate for mayor of Ghaziabad in the upcoming Ghaziabad Nikay Chunaav (Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation Elections). Sunita Dayal and the current mayor Asha Sharma fought hard for the position. However, it’s thought that Sunita Dayal Aggarwal won because Sunita Sharma faced a strong anti-incumbency campaign on the seat where Asha Sharma had previously held office. GHAZIABAD: On the penultimate day of campaigning, BJP’s mayoral candidate Sunita Dayal addressed nine back-to-back public gatherings across 10 wards. Flanked by MP Mahesh Sharma and MLAs Ajitpal Tyagi and Atul Garg, she also held a roadshow from Bajaria to Navyug Market. Dayal is scheduled to address many more gatherings till the campaigning officially ends at 5pm on Tuesday. Earlier, the BJP campaign in the district was spearheaded by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who visited Ghaziabad on Friday. “The response to Monday’s roadshow was impressive. People turned up in huge numbers, clearly indicative that BJP, yet again, going to clinch the mayoral seat,” Dayal told TOI. Cadres are buoyed after chief minister Yogi Adityanath campaigned in Ghaziabad, she said. “There is a groundswell of support and no one is remotely in competition. BJP candidates across all corporations, Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayat will win handsomely.” On Monday, Dayal started off with a public meeting in ward number 12. The poll percentage of the other parties was reduced to single digits. While Congress’s Pushpa Rawat secured 58,951 votes, which was 9.8% of the total votes polled, Poonam Yadav of SP garnered a similar number — 57,608. AAP, which made its foray in the municipal elections this year, ended up at the fifth spot. Its candidate, Janki Bisht, secured just 21,232 votes. In total, 12 candidates contested for 6 lakh votes. Political observers said BJP’s win could be attributed to a full-fledged campaign over the past couple of weeks. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath visited Ghaziabad last week and held a rally for Dayal and other candidates. Even MPs and MLAs attended party campaigns regularly. On the contrary, no senior leader was seen in any of the campaigns by the other parties. In 2017, BJP’s Asha Sharma had managed 2.8 lakh votes, accounting for almost 50% of the total votes polled. Her nearest rival, Dolly Sharma of Congress, garnered 1.2 lakh votes. Since 1995, BJP has always held its sway in the municipal polls. While DC Garg held the mayor’s post for two consecutive terms in 1995 and 2000, Damayanti Goyal won the seat in 2006. The mayor’s post was reserved for a woman that year. In 2012, the seat was reserved for an OBC candidate and BJP’s Teluram Kamboj won it. His death in 2015 necessitated a bypoll, which, too, was won by the saffron party’s Ashu Verma. In 2017, the mayor’s seat was again reserved for a woman. Asha Sharma of BJP won it.

GHAZIABAD: Sunita Dayal, Flanked by a guard and 7-8 supporters, Dayal toured areas such as Raj Nagar, Sihani Gate and Budh Vihar. Later, she attended the chief minister’s rally in Kavi Nagar. “We are confident of winning this election. More than our party workers, voters are excited to participate in the polls and show their support for us. I have been associated with BJP for 40 years. Ghaziabad is a stronghold for us,” she told TOI. On the occasion of Buddh Purnima, she joined devotees at the Maitreya Buddha Vihar in Raj Nagar, clad in a check suit and white stole. Asked about her development plans for the NCR city, Dayal said she wanted Ghaziabad to outperform Indore in the Swachh rankings. “Ghaziabad is a metropolitan city and has proximity to Delhi. We hope to make Ghazuabad cleaner than Indore,” she added. For comparison, while Indore bagged the first position in the Swachh survey last year, Ghaziabad secured the 12th position among cities with a population of 10-40 lakh. But Dayal admitted that keeping the NCR city clean was difficult, given its sheer size. “Earlier, garbage would be dumped at different places. Now, it is picked up from different locations and the roads are cleaned regularly. We will explore all possible options for proper disposal of waste so that the residents do not face any problems,” she said. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 66 seats in the 100-ward Ghaziabad municipal corporation polls, the results of which were announced on Thursday.
