The History of Supreme: From Small Shop to Legendary Cult Status

James Jebbia, the man who, in 1994, founded and to this day runs the SoHo-based company that has been making clothing and skateboards and a lot of other things that the people who love it absolutely have to have, doesn’t think of Supreme the way most people in fashion might—as a brand that started out in a small “The cool, cool shop,” says Jebbia, who is 54 and dressed in jeans and a plain dark-blue T-shirt, label-free and low-key, with closely cropped hair and deep blue eyes. “The shop that carries the cool stuff that everybody was wearing—no big brands or anything.” His office a few blocks west of the Supreme store is adorned with a skateboard designed by Raymond Pettibon; some drawings by Jebbia’s kids, age 8 and 10; and a larger-than-life-size portrait of James Brown—whom Jebbia, crucially, sees as not just the hardest-working man in showbiz but as a guy who never played down to his audience. Jebbia is, likewise, ever-mindful of his customer, who is generally aged eighteen to 25 and wants simply to buy cool stuff—and who will pay for it, assuming it’s worth it. “My thing has always been that the clothing we make is kind of like music,” Jebbia says. “There are always critics that don’t understand that young people can be into Bob Dylan but also into the Wu-Tang Clan and Coltrane and Social Distortion. Young people—and skaters—are very, very open-minded . . . to Recently the fashion world has been waking up to Supreme. In the past decade, the company has opened stores in...

Supreme Sacrifice Day, March 18 Holiday. To Honor, Remember.

Supreme Sacrifice Day recognizes the ultimate sacrifice made by some for the good of others. History is filled with examples of people who offered the supreme sacrifice for other people. While most often we think of someone who gave their life, the supreme sacrifice could be something non-fatal. Can you think of an example? When you give up something you want or need, you are making a sacrifice. And, sometimes, the sacrifice is extreme. Use this March 18 holiday to remember them, the sacrifice they made, and why. We offer these examples: • Jesus Christ gave the supreme sacrifice when he died on the cross for us. • Soldiers in battle gave their lives to protect our freedom, and our way of life, and to keep us safe. • Firemen and police officers sometimes give their lives in the line of duty while saving and/or protecting people. • More often than you think, a young man or young woman caught up in a love triangle, gave up the chase for the sake of their loved one. • A person gives up their job and career to tend to an elderly parent. • The list goes on and on and on. Today is a day to reflect and offer thanks and appreciation to those who made the supreme sacrifice for us. We’ve identified the main objectives of this special day: • You are encouraged to embrace your awkwardness today. • Celebrate and forget past awkward moments. • Share those memorable moments with a friend. Laugh about it. • Stop taking yourself so seriously. Life is too short to dwell on it or remain embar...

Quotes from Oedipus Rex

Oedipus Rex is a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles. Greek tragedies feature a tragic hero, a protagonist who has a fatal flaw that eventually leads to his or her downfall. Often tragic heroes start from a place of high standing and end up falling to a place of low standing. Anakin Skywalker from the Star Wars movies is an example of a tragic hero. He begins as a 'good guy' fighting for the Republic. Unfortunately, his desire for power and control goes too far, and Anakin ends his life on the dark side of the force--as Darth Vader. Let's explore some of the quotes that are most important in Sophocles' Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex. Thebes Asks Oedipus for Help As the play opens, the city of Thebes suffers from a plague. The priest and citizens beg Oedipus to save them from it as he has saved them in the past. They see him as 'the mightiest head' among them all because he has helped them before--by solving the Sphinx's riddle and keeping the monster from terrorizing the city. Because of Oedipus' first miraculous act, the citizens believe that he is the only one who has the power to 'succor' (provide relief for) the city and end the plague. The following quote also shows us not only how the city views their king, but also why Oedipus is so full of himself: he's told that he's awesome all the time. It's understandable why he thinks so highly of himself. The priest says: Thou art named, and known, our life's establisher. Thee therefore, Oedipus, the mightiest head Among us all, al...
