Remembering Swami Vivekananda on his 160th Birthday

Swami Vivekananda, a spiritual genius of commanding intelligence and power, packed an incredible amount of work and accomplishment into his brief life (1863–1902). Vivekananda, whose given name was Narendranath Datta, was initially taken with the atheistic Western philosophical traditions when he was a young man. Sri Ramakrishna was that master for him; he dispelled his fears, showed him the way to enlightenment, and made him a credible spiritual leader. Foremost among Sri Ramakrishna’s students, Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), was also a prominent advocate for Vedanta worldwide. Swami Vivekananda’s lectures, letters, and poems are collected in The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda, or Swamiji as he is affectionately known, believed that it was more effective to teach objective principles than specific individuals. As a result, he avoids discussing Sri Ramakrishna in favour of the Vedanta philosophy in his lectures and books. After being appointed to represent Hinduism at the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions held in Chicago for the World’s Columbian Exposition, Vivekananda travelled to Chicago to share the Hindu faith’s message. In his opening remarks, Swamiji addressed the audience as “sisters and brothers of America,” prompting them to stand up. As a result, he was sought out to give talks all over the United States and Europe. Many Vedanta Societies established in the Americas and Europe between 1893 and 1900 can trace their roots back to Vivekananda o...
