Taj: Reign Of Revenge Season 2 Review: Still royally unpredictable and equally bloodsoaked

Story: The intense battle for the throne continues unabated with more treacherous moves and murders within the Mughal empire. Review: Season 2 ‘Taj: Divided by Blood’ starts with a leap of 15 years after the events of the first season. A few minutes long recap montage certainly doesn’t do justice to the years of plotting, scheming and blood that was spilled in Season 1. One has to watch it in totality to understand and enjoy what happens next. And it’s no spoiler when we say it has a lot to do with power-hungry royals baying for each other’s blood and women unsuccessfully trying to wrestle control over the men and their actions. Throughout the show, there is a lot more familial tension and backstabbing than any external threat to Badshah Akbar’s Mughal Empire that is going through its most challenging phase. Vibhu Puri who takes over the directorial reign from Ron Scalpelo lets the story flow seamlessly with all the hallmarks of the show firmly in place. But now since the gloves are off, it’s a lot more cut and dry. The relationship between the royal siblings and even their offspring continues to be strained beyond repair. The pace of the screenplay remains quite swift but there's less action. It’s hard not to miss the hot-headed Prince Murad (Taaha Shah Badussha), who was always raking up conflicts and spilling blood. Daniyal’s (Shubham Kumar Mehra) coming into his own makes up for it somewhat and the show continues to be unpredictably savage. This season too opens with v...

Taj: Divided by Blood Season 1 Review: A factually questionable yet a highly riveting period drama

Story: Emperor Akbar’s quest to find a worthy successor to his throne lays bare treacherous intentions, dirty politics and a bloody familial feud. Who will survive this intense battle for power? Review: The life and times of one of India’s most prolific Mughal rulers - Emperor Abu'l-Fath Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar, is a source material so strong that it never fails to engage the audience. Despite many blockbuster films and shows already made on the subject, Abhimany Singh’s show ‘Taj: Divided by Blood’ is by far one of the most exhaustive pieces on it. Set during the era when Akbar ruled almost the entire Indian subcontinent, the show mainly focuses on his relationship with his three sons - Salim (Aashim Gulati), Murad (Taaha Shah Badussha) and Daniyal (Shubham Kumar Mehra), who are in the race to be the heir apparent of the flourishing Mughal empire. Their differences, and individual personalities fuel the story with enough ammo to build a strong and engaging narrative. Based on true events, the makers seem to have taken enough and more liberties in depicting a juicy tale of all that went on inside Akbar’s powerful and complex family. We’re not sure how much it is factually correct. There are just so many characters, but almost each one of them has an interesting track. Unlike other shows, this one doesn’t leave the audience confused and disinterested in boring plotlines that simply just add to the runtime. It may have something to do with the highly fictional take on a ...
