Tanpura

Introduction Tanpura in India is a drone instrument that accompanies Dhrupad singing and is the most fundamental of all instruments of Indian Classical Music. The fundamental principles on which Indian classical music is based are all embodied in the Tanpura. The curved bridge of the Tanpura and its unusual shape produce melodius sound that is very rich in overtones. When a string of the Tanpura is plucked the produce is not a pure note fixed in pitch, but a note that oscillates by a miniscule amount owing to the curved bridge. The Tanpura embodies the concept of a note that is not fixed but is fluid with infinite microtonal shades. Tanpura tuning is a complex task and advanced practitioners of Dhrupad especially in the Dagar Tradition -can tune a Tanpura to reflect the flavour of the raga to be performed. Many famous Indian musicians get their Tanpuras made by the craftsman from Miraj. Tanpura or Tambura, a long-necked drone lute which is a chordophones from the lute family of instruments. Tanpura has four or six stringed fretless instrument with a long hollow neck and rounded body. A Tanpura is the heart of Indian Classical Music. A painting needs a canvas, which is plain and rich. In same way, a musician cannot sing or play in the void. He needs a reference, a backdrop. A Tanpura, at a very basic and essential level serves that purpose. But, a Tanpura is not only the canvas. Often, musicians refer to their Tanpura being their Guru (Master). There are numerous stories of the love affair between Tanpura and great maestros. What is so special about this four stringed instrument which makes it so unique and so dear to sincere music practitioners? We will try to understand more about the Tanpura and en-route, will also try to find answers to some of these questions. Tanpura/तानपुरा : Making and Construction A Tanpura is a product of nature. Ideally, all the parts and components should be sourced from nature. The most important part of the Tanpura is the gourd resonator called Tumba or Bhopla/ भोपळा. Made from a dried, hollow gourd, this resonator gives Tanpura the unique volume. Traditionally, these gourds are grown at Mangalwedha in Maharashtra and also in some parts of the state of Bengal. As the story goes, centuries ago, African honey would come to India. Hollow African gourds were used as the containers to store and transport this honey. The same breed of gourds is grown in India to make Tanpuras. As it can be seen, the Gourd is cut at half and a wooden encasing is fit on it. This casing is called the Tabli/तबली. The Tanpura usually has four strings...

The Tanpura (called "tamboura" or "tambura" in South India) is the instrument that provides the characteristic drone background in most Indian Classical Music. Like a sitar, a tanpura has a curved bridge or “jawari” which produces the buzzy sound that characterizes the drone. Most tanpuras have 4 or 5 strings, and are tuned to 2 or 3 different notes. They can make a lovely bouquet of overtones. There are three groups of tanpuras. Male tanpuras, the largest, are made to match the male singing voice and sound best between B flat and D sharp. Female tanpuras, slightly smaller, sound best about a fifth higher, from F to B. Instrumental tanpuras, the smallest, are made to accompany a stringed instrument like a sitar or sarode, and sound best an octave up from a Male tanpura.
