Telangana state: Importance of September 17

The erstwhile Hyderabad state consisting of 16 districts (8 Telangana districts, 5 Marathwada districts and 3 districts of Karnataka) had been under the rule of Nizam from 1724 to 1948, accounting for a period of 224 years. While India got its independence on August 15, 1947, the people of Hyderabad state got their independence on September 17, 1948 with the intervention of the then union home minister of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Going back into the history, the erstwhile Hyderabad state got its independence on September 17, 1948, thirteen months after India got its independence; and the oppressed people of this region started feeling a sigh of relief. Despite the fact Hyderabad state got its independence and joined the Indian union, there was no separate government for the people of this region till state assembly elections were conducted in India, in 1952. In these elections the Indian National Congress emerged as the winning party with 93 seats in Hyderabad state. Dr. Burgula Ramakrishna Rao got elected as the first chief minister of Hyderabad state. Till that time i.e. from 1948 to 1952, the state of Hyderabad was under the military rule. Telangana Congress To Introduce State Flag On September 17 To Mark Hyderabad Integration Day

Telangana Congress chief Revanth Reddy said on Monday that the party would hoist a separate state flag along with the tricolour on September 17 to mark 75th Hyderabad integration day. Reddy said the Telangana flag would represent the state's pride. The Congress will also celebrate Hyderabad integration day from September 17, 2022 to September 17, 2023. Reddy said the Telangana flag would be hoisted in all the villages of the state along with the tricolour. Congress will also introduce a new "Telangana thalli" that will reflect all the sections of Telangana people. Telangana Thalli is a symbolic mother goddess for the people of Telangana. The Centre has also announced cultural activities for year-long commemoration of Hyderabad Liberation Day. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be the chief guest at the inaugural programme to be organised at Parade Grounds in Hyderabad. Ministry of Culture has also invited the Chief Ministers of Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra to attend the inaugural programme in Hyderabad. HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has demanded that the government officially observe September 17 as Telangana Independence Day commemorating the liberation of Telangana. In an open letter to the chief minister on Thursday, the TRS asked Chandrababu Naidu to issue a notification for officially organising the function. Speaking to reporters, TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao said that the Maharashtra and Karnataka governments were officially observing Independence day in the region constituting the erstwhile Telangana which were merged into their states.
