How many more Air Quality Alert Days will we have?

What You Need To Know • Air quality continues to be most compromised today in western and central, southern New York Sate • Smoke monitoring is being carefully tracked by local Meteorologists, the Department of Conservation and the New York State Mesonet • While the air is smoky again today, it should not be as thick as yesterday, thanks to a trough of low pressure On Thursday, smoky and hazy conditions will be most noticeable in areas west and south areas in New York State. There is some good news for Eastern New York as an Air Quality Alert continues today; the smoky skies will gradually decrease from north to south because of a trough moving down from New England. Here's what the air quality report is showing for our area today: A trough of low pressure has backed down over the state bringing clouds and occasional rain showers. Any rain showers that transpire are a benefit in multiple ways, as they not only moisten the air and ground, but they also aid in cleaning the air of smoke particulates. Showers will be scattered through the next couple of days. A northerly breeze and another plume of smoke headed down from thenorth is forecast to impact o Western and Southern New York today then continue to head south through Pennsylvania to the Mid Atlantic States, while lesser smoke conditions develop in Eastern New York and in the Adirondacks to New England. The downpour was one of a few showers that developed across the state. Small hail was also visible on radar. A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect in Wright, Carver, and McLeod counties until 3:45 p.m. Meteorologist Katie Steiner said that while the best chance for rain will last through the afternoon, not all areas will see rain.

Getting hotter and more rain in the forecast

Tonight will be mild. (Copyright 2023 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved.) Thursday’s Forecast: Temperatures will top out once again in the lower-90s with isolated afternoon thunderstorms. We have a low severe weather threat for most of southeast Texas for the risk of strong winds and small hail. A low threat for hail and damaing winds (Copyright 2023 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved.) Scorching heat returns: After the rain moves out, high pressure moves in and dominates the forecast next week. Forecast highs will be in the mid-to-upper 90s and even 100 degrees, the hottest we’ve seen since last September! Next week temperatures range from 96 to 100 degrees (Copyright 2023 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved.) 10-day Forecast: As rain chances lower, temperatures climb. We’ll have off and on rain through Saturday. But starting Sunday, we’re going to get our hottest temperatures of the year. And it isn’t out of the question we’ll get our first 100 degree day of the year next week.

Warmer weather today and tomorrow; Late week rain chances ahead

It’s shaping up to be another warm and dry day in much of KELOLAND. The water levels in the Big Sioux River continue to fall, but we do have a few rain chances to follow later in the week. The satellite map shows a lack of rain in our area for now as high pressure blocks any moisture for now. The 30 day precipitation map still shows a number of areas shaded in yellow or orange. We’ll watch the rain chances later this week to see how the math changes across the region. The fire and smoke map below still shows the impact across KELOLAND as we deal with hazy skies. Futurecast shows a dry trend today across KELOLAND. Temperatures in the central and northeast will be able to surpass some of the projected numbers shows below. We expect a chance of widely scattered showers and t-storms in Wyoming late tomorrow, a trend that could start affecting western SD as early as tomorrow night. Dew points will be increasing later this week, a sign that rain chances will be going up toward the end of the week. It will be interesting to watch how long the dew points stay higher into Saturday in southeastern KELOLAND. The timeline on the rain chance appears to be slowing down. As a result, Sioux Falls may have rain chances much of Saturday and possibly linger into early Sunday across our MN and IA counties. That’s good news for those needing some rain, but it may also impact weekend activities. The rain map the next 10 days is still wettest in western SD. Here are the details of the forecast.
