'Thank God' movie review: A joyless, preachy effort

Express News Service The conundrum with Thank God is that it is simply not content with entertaining the viewers, like Indra Kumar’s good-old Ishq or Dhamaal. Remember the ending of the hilarious Dhamaal that takes a curt turn toward sentimentality? All the emotional moments in Thank God feel as artificial and shoehorned as the ending of Dhamaal. Thank God carries a heavy prerogative to preach and trigger a contemplation about life, guilt, regrets, and relationships. While one certainly doesn’t hold any right to dictate the storytelling choices of filmmakers, it is hard not to pinpoint the loftiness of their ambitions when the desired emotional beats fail to land. Thank God gets lost between comedy and melodrama, failing to realise either of these angles fully. There’s a lousy attempt at invoking discomfort at the close-up shot of a mango being consumed; the film tries to paint this act in a ‘disgusting’ light. Moments later, the same act is used to create an endearing moment. Now, the idea to use the same action for two contrasting reactions—discomfort and comfort—sounds interesting on paper but it translates to the screen with the energy of a tax lecture. This is one of the many such sequences that Thank God sincerely believes, make for wholesome storytelling. Unfortunately, it gets carried away by its intentions. Thank God, the film is just 120 minutes long, although it feels way longer with scenes stretching on and on. Thank God tells the story of Ayaan Kapoor (Siddhar...

Thank God review: Even the Almighty can’t help Ajay Devgn, Sidharth Malhotra film

Swerving wildly to save a motorcyclist who comes in his way, Mumbai-based real-estate high-flier Ayaan Kapoor (Malhotra) crashes into a car. The screen goes blank. When he comes to, Ayaan finds himself in front of an important-looking personage who introduces himself as CG aka Chitragupt (Ajay Devgn), and who appears to be lording over an unearthly arena dotted with rows of silent witnesses. The black-clad CG is judge-jury-executioner and chief inquisitor, all rolled in one. And Ayaan is in the dock: what kind of human is he? The kind who lies and cheats and deserves to fry in hell till all eternity, or spend the rest of his life with his loving family, wife (Singh) and young daughter? The official remake of Norwegian film ‘Sorte Kugler’, ‘ Thank God’ marks Indra Kumar’s return to Bollywood after a sizeable gap. Best known for his musical rom coms with Bollywood stars acting as overgrown delinquents (‘Dil’), and the raunchy ‘Masti’ and ‘Dhamaal’ franchises stuffed with oversexed men and double-meaning dialogues, his style is still same-old, and it does nothing for a fantasy which needed to be light on its feet. The conceit born of a human suspended between life and death, embracing reform and turning over a new leaf, is a familiar one. We’ve had versions of it both in Hollywood and Bollywood, but I’m hard put to remember one which is as dull and pointless. Devgn gets several opportunities to deliver his trademark smirk, while waiting for the obligatory ‘Singham’ reference,...
