Longitude is measured from the Prime Meridian, in both directions ... east and west. The farthest possible excursion away from the Prime Meridian in either direction is half-way around the Earth ... after you've gone that far, every additional step puts you closer to the Prime Meridian. Halfway around the Earth in one direction is 180 degrees east. Halfway around it in the other direction is 180 degrees west. The greatest possible longitude in either direction is 180 degrees, and both of those are the same meridian (line).
