'The Good Nurse' True Story, According to Amy Loughren

If you’re one of the many viewers who recently watched Tobias Lindholm’s The Good Nurse, which debuted on The Good Nurse’s final scenes include subtitles that briefly summarize the real-life story’s epilogue: Cullen, responsible for killing an estimated 400 patients during his sixteen years of working at hospitals across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, pled guilty to the murder of 29 patients in 2003. He’s now serving 18 consecutive life sentences in New Jersey State Prison. As for Loughren, she now lives with her family in Florida. Still, as the credits roll, it doesn’t exactly feel like justice has been served. After all, there are many loose ends still floating in the ether–from unidentified victims, to hospitals’ unaddressed negligence, and, perhaps the most glaring loose end of all, the subtitle that reads, "He never explained why he did it." Related Stories • How 'The Good Nurse' Pulled It Off • The Best Movies of 2022 Last month, The Good Nurse. (As messy as it may be.) Turns out, many of these loose ends were intentionally left open by Lindholm and screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns when they adapted Charles Graeber’s 2013 book of the same name. Wilson-Cairns seems to have expected audience members to be frustrated–because having a full explanation to such atrocities can make us feel safer. As for that climactic confession scene, when Loughren wraps her sweater around Cullen, before probing him to confess for the murder of multiple patients, Loughren confirmed that the...

The True Story Behind Netflix's The Good Nurse

Charles Cullen is a former registered nurse who worked in hospitals across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where he assisted with procedures, tended to patients, and became one of America’s most prolific serial killers. Over his 16-year career, Cullen is confirmed to have murdered 29 patients, and is believed to have killed as many as 400 people in total through multiple means, including covertly dosing them with drugs like insulin and digoxin. The story of how his crimes were finally uncovered is explored in the new The Good Nurse, starring Eddie Redmayne as Cullen and Jessica Chastain as a fellow nurse Amy Loughren, and based on the book of the same name by Charles Graeber. Here’s what to know about Cullen, the story uncovered in The Good Nurse, and the medical true crime genre. How Charles Cullen’s crimes were discovered In a departure from many other titles in the true crime genre, The Good Nurse doesn’t focus its sympathies, or even much of its attention, on the killer. Instead, the film follows Loughren, a night-shift nurse and single mother of two who is struggling to manage a serious heart condition in the face of unrelenting overwork, when Cullen is hired to work alongside her. Relieved, she leans on and confides in him, and the two become friends—mirroring their real-life close relationship. Soon after Cullen is hired, stable patients begin passing away under suspicious circumstances. A woman recovering from an allergic reaction who’s just found true love at 77 dies...

The Good Nurse movie review & film summary (2022)

Amy Loughren (Chastain) is a nurse at an average New Jersey hospital, trying to balance being a single mother with her high-stress job. This gets even harder when she’s diagnosed with a cardiac condition that could kill her if she doesn’t get a heart transplant in time. She keeps the diagnosis from her bosses, staying on at work because she hasn’t been there long enough to get the health insurance needed to deal with it. The heart issue adds a ticking time bomb aspect to “The Good Nurse” in that if the tension of what’s about to happen causes too high a heart rate in Amy, she could die. She thinks the opposite is going to happen when she meets the kindly Charles Cullen (Redmayne), a new nurse who befriends Amy and offers to help her with her patients, and even with taking care of her children. At first, Charles seems like a lifesaver, a colleague who knows Amy’s secret, and wants to be there to help. Amy has no idea that the hospital, led by an icy Would Charles Cullen, who it is confirmed killed at least 29 people—though it's suspected the total may have been in the hundreds—have ever been caught without the courage of someone within the system? The truth is that the lawsuit-terrified operations that hired and fired Cullen didn’t come close to performing their moral duties, shuffling a serial killer off to his next victim. And as long as that kind of business-over-ethics principle was in place, Cullen could have continued. Lindholm was clearly drawn to the hero arc of thi...
