Australia crowned ICC World Test Champions with win over India

Superb first-innings centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith gave Australia control of the Test early on, but India responded well to force the match to a fifth day, falling short of what would have been an all-time record chase to win a Test as they were bowled out for 234. Scott Boland got the ball rolling with two early dismissals in the day, with Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc also among the wickets as Australia rattled through India to win the World Test Championship title. Australia were the dominant team during the WTC cycle, finishing top of the standings to qualify for the showpiece final against India thanks to 11 wins from 19 matches. Nathan Lyon ended this Test Championship campaign as the world’s highest wicket-taker. And four of the top six run-scorers in the WTC cycle were Australian, with only Joe Root scoring more than Usman Khawaja (1621) and Marnus Labuschagne (1576), and the first innings heroes Head and Smith scoring 1407 and 1389 runs respectively in the Championship. India’s strong finish to their campaign saw them bag the second spot in the standings and qualify for the final against Australia in south London. But defeat means that India have now lost each of the two WTC Finals to have been held since the conception of the tournament. Day five of this 2023 Final had resumed with all results still possible, with Australia requiring seven wickets to win and India needing 280 more runs at the start of play. With Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane unbeat...

It is still Australia's to lose, but what a contest it has been. There was some surprise that Australia batted for as long as they did, setting India a mammoth 444. But Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma started beautifully, as did Cheteshwar Pujara, before they became India's three wickets to fall. Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey: "We've got the runs on the board that we wanted. It would definitely have been nice to have taken a couple of more wickets but they played well, so we've got to come back and push on tomorrow." On Cameron Green's catch: "It looked good from where I was. I thought he caught it fair and square. He was pretty happy with it, so yeah, the right decision was made." On India's opening stand: "No, it's never nice seeing our bowlers go at sixes for that amount of time but we pegged them bag after that and it's goi...

India vs South Africa T20 2022 Highlights Updates: The decision to bowl first backfired for Temba Bavuma as India piled a gigantic 237/3 in 20 overs in the second T20I in Guwahati on Sunday. In response, David Miller slammed an unbeaten 106(47) as South Africa managed 221-3 in 20 overs. Quinton de Kock too returned unbeaten, smashing 69 off 48 balls. India vs New Zealand (IND vs NZ) 3rd T20I: India’s young top order will be under pressure to deliver in the series-deciding third T20 International against New Zealand here on Wednesday. It would be fair to say the trio of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tripathi has not made their opportunities count in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and K L Rahul. After the game on Wednesday, India don’t play a T20I for a long time, leaving the younger crop to make a statement before the focus shifts to the five-day format. Kishan has not been able to find rhythm in his batting since his double hundred in Bangladesh while the turning ball has troubled Gill, who has not been able to replicate his ODI form in the shortest format. Tripathi, too, has wasted chances that have come his way in the absence of regular number three Kohli. If it hadn’t been for Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, India would have struggled to chase down 100 on Sunday. The surfaces in the series have attracted a lot of attention and it remains to be seen if the players get to negotiate another turning track at the IND vs NZ 3rd T20I Live Streaming Details: When will India vs New Zealand (IND vs NZ) 3rd T20I be played? World Test Championship: India captain Rohit Sharma wants final to be three

Rohit acknowledged the biggest obstacle to a final series is finding the space in an increasingly hectic schedule. "You need to have fair opportunities to both the teams," the 36-year-old said. "In the next cycle, if it is possible, a three-match series would be ideal. "I would love that. But is there a time? That's the big question. It's about finding that window where it can be fit in." • Australia ruthlessly beat India to win title • Cummins targets 'legacy-defining' Ashes win • Download Test Match Special podcast The cricket calendar is already packed, with Test cricket competing against two other formats for space in a schedule that includes a men's ICC event - 50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup or Champions Trophy - every year for the next eight years. Domestic franchise competitions around the world mean players can already play year round, while England Test captain Ben Stokes said it was "unsustainable" to play in all three formats when he announced his retirement from one-day international cricket last summer. However, Rohit believes the nature of Test cricket lends itself to a multi-game series. "In an event like this, you work hard for two years and then you have only one shot at it," he said. "You cannot get into that momentum that you need in Test cricket. "Test cricket is all about finding that rhythm, finding that momentum." Australia captain Pat Cummins says he is happy with the current format and pointed to one-off finals in other sports such as Australian ...
