'Tooth Pari' review: This Twilight with a twist is riddled with missteps

Express News Service Imagine this situation. You see a couple leaving a hotel bar together, and checking into a room for some intimacy. We sense there is something off about this scenario. Be it the camera angles, the unnecessarily upbeat music, or just their body language—we understand the girl is in danger. Soon enough, the couple’s embrace turns deadly with teeth turning into fangs, and a neck turning bloody. It is then we realise that she is not in danger, but she is the danger. She later calls her girlfriend Sreela, who is a fellow sanguisuga, and feeds on the unconscious man. At the outset, they might be two women who hunt down a man and bring him to a vulnerable position, but they aren’t exactly bad people. Rumi (Tanya Maniktala) is also a vampire who only just sucks enough blood to not kill the human. As the girls leave, they speak about sneaking into this territory of humans, their pathos, and what makes this world a picnic trip for them. Off to a promising start, Tooth Pari, which is set in Kolkata, soon establishes the central love story—it is very similar to Twilight, but with a twist. Rumi, who is of archaic age, survives in her youthful appearance. She is a vampire with a bitter past and suffers loss during her human tenure, which is similar to Rosalie Cullen’s plight in Stephenie Meyer’s novel. There is also a yearning for a baby, and betrayed emotions in the play, to name a few. Rumi lives with her coven in what they call as Neeche (referring to the world u...

'Tooth Pari' Ending, Explained: Did Rumi And Roy Reunite? What To Expect In Season 2?

When I first watched the trailer for “Tooth Pari,” I hoped that it would not be as bad as I thought it could be. But even with the old-world Calcutta charm and a decent cast, “Tooth Pari” fails to deliver the epic supernatural Hindi language series that one can only wish for. “Tooth Pari” hoped to be too many things, but it ended up becoming just another boring Netflix watch. The humorous dialogues are perhaps the most entertaining aspect of the series. I am tired of watching Calcutta through a Bollywood-tinted lens, and it is disappointing that Pratim Dasgupta also incorporated the same trope. The cliche Bengali parents, their timid son, and the dimly lit old Calcutta buildings—oh, how frustratingly stereotypical we can get! Spoilers Ahead ‘Tooth Pari’ Plot Summary: What Is The Series About? Apart from the cliches, we have the vampires and the witches. Dasgupta drew a laughable connection between the Naxalite movement in West Bengal and the emergence of the blood-thirsty vampires. The witches managed to underground the fanged creatures, but their desire to navigate the “Upar” and draw fresh blood continues. The Baghinis, or rebel vampires, defy the rules set by their leader Ora and often leave the premises for some soul-satisfying hunting. The vampires feed on packaged blood from the blood banks that their caretaker/protector, A.D., regularly brings them. A.D. is a human, but protecting vampires has been a part of his family tradition. But A.D. is not as selfless as he ap...

Tooth Pari: When Love Bites Review

The idiosyncratic urban fairy tale at the core of Tooth Pari: When Love Bites, a Netflix original series written and directed by Pratim Dasgupta, is set in contemporary Kolkata. What, however, hangs over the arcane collision-of-two-worlds fantasy, both stylistically and textually, is the defiantly bohemian spirit of 1960s and 1970s Calcutta. More a genteel romance than a zany and zippy sanguinary lore, Tooth Pari: When Love Bites is a story of impossible love that rides on a range of emotions, impulses and eccentric sleights. It is mildly diverting and technically spiffy fare bolstered by a great cast. The series bridges (successfully for the most part) two opposing spheres - one inhabited by a handful of vampires prone to sending their victims into "deep hyp", the other occupied by flesh-and-blood humans dealing with matters that often stray beyond the mundane. Tooth Pari: When Love Bites tells the story of a vampire whose human existence did not go well and a diffident young man browbeaten by his parents into jettisoning his dreams. The two are drawn to each other after a chance encounter despite the immense divide that separates them and the dangers inherent in the liaison. When their paths cross, blood is inadvertently but inevitably drawn. Just one drop opens a door for the pretty 'ghost' who leaves her underground hideaway (a place that is simply referred to as 'Neeche') every night through a manhole pathway and, when that is sealed in the wake of a crisis, through a...
